Sonnenberg’s local history begins with a striking contrast: around 1524, Sonnenberg was a deserted village site and held as a fief by the Bredows of Rheinsberg; from 1581, the village was rebuilt. These key dates set two distinct periods side by side and provide a concrete starting point for exploring the village’s history. Historic buildings can also be found in other places in the municipality, with their materials and construction dates offering different points of interest.

History and buildings in the municipality

The half-timbered church in Baumgarten was rebuilt in 1704; its weather vane dates from 1743. In Rönnebeck, there is a fieldstone church dating from the 13th century, which was remodelled and partly extended in the 17th century. In these two places in the municipality, you can encounter different building styles and periods: half-timbering with a later-dated weather vane in one, and fieldstone with medieval origins and 17th-century alterations in the other. The half-timbered church in Baumgarten is open to visitors.

The castle that still stands today is in Rauschendorf. After a major fire in 1922, it was rebuilt on the foundations of the old castle, in a style inspired by the region’s Baroque manor houses. Rauschendorf, Baumgarten and Rönnebeck are places in the municipality, so the buildings described are not in the village of Sonnenberg itself. Together, the church and castle offer different points of reference for exploring the municipality’s architectural history.

More highlights in the Oberhavel destination

Oberhavel is part of the Ruppiner Seenland tourism region. In the wider destination, the cultural attractions in Oranienburg offer a different focus from the buildings in the municipality of Sonnenberg. Oranienburg Palace is the oldest Baroque palace in the Margraviate of Brandenburg. The palace museum displays famous works of art from the 17th century, as well as a unique Silver Chamber and a remarkable Porcelain Chamber. An exhibition room of the Oberhavel Regional Museum in the palace is devoted exclusively to its history: from the Ascanian castle built around 1200 to its present-day use.

Oberhavel also offers a range of nature experiences. The Stechlin Nature Park Visitor Centre features an interactive exhibition about the distinctive features of Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park. The sensory garden beside the visitor centre invites you to taste, smell, touch and listen to herbs, shrubs and other plants. A forest and water trail of around 6 km around Lake Roofensee can complement a visit to the visitor centre. The exhibition, garden and trail each appeal to different interests in nature.
