Zehlendorf is a well-preserved Anger village at the transition between the Barnim ground moraine plateau and the Havel lowlands.

Anger Village and Open Landscape

The surrounding area is characterised mainly by arable land and permanent grassland. Scattered among them are small and medium-sized wooded areas, bringing individual patches of woodland into the open landscape. This combination of cultivated fields and scattered woods defines Zehlendorf’s rural character. When choosing accommodation, this may be a factor if you are looking for a village settlement and open landscape as key impressions of your trip.

Zehlendorf lies at the junction of the L 21 and L 29 regional roads. The L 21 connects Schildow with Zehdenick, while the L 29 connects Schmachtenhagen with Biesenthal. The roads and their stated endpoints provide a concrete point of reference alongside the landscape description.

Clay Pit Pond and Village Church

The clay pit pond in Zehlendorf, by the radio station, is a fishing lake surrounded by a belt of woodland. It covers 3.93 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 15 metres. The easiest way to get there is by car via Tongrubenweg. Fishing permits are available through the Brandenburg State Anglers’ Association; permits and use may be subject to local rules.

The village church offers a different point of interest. Dedicated in 1872, the Romanesque brick hall church was designed by Friedrich August StĂĽler and is a listed monument. Its dedication year, architectural style and architect give the building a clear historical and architectural significance. In Zehlendorf, an interest in fishing and an appreciation of architectural history sit alongside the rural landscape.

In the wider Oranienburg destination

The wider Oranienburg destination has its own cultural and cycling themes. Oranienburg Palace is one of the most important Baroque buildings in the Mark Brandenburg region. The Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum commemorates, at the authentic site, the history of Sachsenhausen concentration camp (1936–1945), Soviet Special Camp No. 1/7 (1945–1950), and the development of the National Memorial and Museum (1945–1961). Thirteen permanent exhibitions can be visited in preserved camp buildings, each with a thematic focus connected to the corresponding location. There is also an extensive educational programme offered by the museum.

The cycle routes also differ in length and route. The 50 km Hollanders’ Circular Route connects Liebenwalde and Oranienburg. The 215 km Lakes and Culture Cycle Route is a circular route in the Ruppiner Land, connecting Neuruppin, Rheinsberg and Oranienburg, among other places. The approximately 300 km Fontane Cycle Route starts in Oranienburg and leads through Brandenburg in the footsteps of the poet and thinker Theodor Fontane. Check route conditions before setting off.

The Oranienburg tourism portal offers themed tours and individually bookable tours for groups, families or individuals—on foot, by bicycle or by bus.
