Berlinchen combines a rural landscape with a clearly recognisable local history: wetlands and meadows are just as much a part of the picture as a circular historic village layout and a church with its own architectural history. This gives you distinct, tangible focal points for planning your trip: nature and village culture.

Landscapes by the Lake and in the Heath

Berlinchen is located in a landscape near the Mecklenburg Lake District. Around Lake Berlinchen, meadows and pastures border the marshland. The Wittstock Heath forest is about two kilometres away, offering opportunities for walks and hikes. This gives you two different points of interest for the nature-focused part of your trip: the wetlands by the lake and the forest landscape of the heath. The approximate distance gives you a guide when deciding how to prioritise these features in your plans.

Village History and Community Celebrations

Berlinchen’s history dates back to Wendish origins. The original village layout was circular; the settlement was built on a hill surrounded by marshes. The settlement pattern and landscape together form part of the historic character of the village. The village church was built between 1852 and 1854. Its organ comes from Albert Hollenbach’s Neuruppin workshop: the instrument has nine stops and was consecrated in 1899. The village cultural association organises community events, including recurring fishing and harvest festivals. Specific event dates may vary.

Historic Townscapes in Wittstock/Dosse

Wittstock/Dosse has its own urban historical setting. The town fortifications measure 2,435 metres in total: 1,999 metres of town wall, 264 metres of administrative wall and 172 metres of castle wall. Apart from a small fieldstone base in the north, they are built entirely of monastery-format bricks. The Ostprignitz Museum is located in the Bishop’s Castle. A park at Bleichwall lies directly beside the historic town wall and an old cloth factory. The Glinze flows through Friedrich-Ebert Park, where it is crossed by two wooden bridges.

The three-nave St. Mary’s Church, whose construction began in the 13th century, is a landmark of the former bishop’s town. Its tower is 68 metres high. The interior includes an altar structure made up of two carved altarpieces, a late Gothic sacrament shrine, a Baroque wooden baptismal font, a Madonna in a radiant halo, the Lütkemüller organ and the pulpit. Public guided tours of the historic old town are offered from May to October. They share interesting facts and legends from the town’s history; check the specific dates before your trip.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

When looking for accommodation in Berlinchen, it is worth deciding on a priority first: should the surrounding landscape or the village’s history shape your stay? Walks and hikes in the heath, the wetlands by the lake, and the village layout and church offer different points of interest. If you are planning together, you can compare in advance which of these themes matters most to your group.
