Ostprignitz-Ruppin combines vast, predominantly rural landscapes with special opportunities for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide, the region’s lakes and rivers, and a network of diverse routes lend a trip a variety of highlights. When planning, it is worth first considering whether you mainly want to experience nature, explore a cycling route, or combine culture and landscapes.

Heathland, forests and lake country

The Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide covers 12,000 hectares in Ostprignitz-Ruppin and has been part of Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park since 2021. With its Calluna heath, it is one of Europe’s largest contiguous heathland areas. The open heathland provides a habitat for numerous protected and endangered animal species. These include more than 70 bird species; wolves have also found a habitat here since 2008.

Ostprignitz-Ruppin’s landscape also features green beech and pine forests, meadows and shady avenues, as well as numerous lakes and rivers. Ruppiner Seenland is one of the county’s travel regions. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find a range of landscape themes to consider when choosing the focus of their trip.

Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park lies partly within Ostprignitz-Ruppin and invites visitors to hike and cycle. The Ruppiner-Land circular hiking trail follows part of the E 10 European long-distance path. For a view across the landscape, head to the 15-metre-high Heideturm on Heinz-Sielmann-HĂĽgel: from there, the view extends across the varied surrounding area.

Cycling routes and nature experiences

The region’s routes vary in length and theme. The 108-kilometre Bischofstour takes you through places including Heiligengrabe and Wittstock, combining the ride through the Prignitz landscape with a journey back to the Middle Ages. It follows fully developed, signposted cycle paths throughout. Heiligengrabe and Wittstock have rail connections to Berlin and Hamburg.

The 160-kilometre GestĂĽtsweg connects the Redefin and Neustadt (Dosse) stud farms and forms part of a cross-regional bridleway network together with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In Ostprignitz-Ruppin, the Brandenburg State Stud in Neustadt (Dosse) is also a special attraction for equestrians. The Bischofstour, by contrast, has a different focus: it leads through the Prignitz landscape and draws attention to the Middle Ages. These different route ideas can help you tailor your trip to your preferred activity.

The Fontane Cycle Route also offers a literary connection: it takes cyclists to places and landscapes that Theodor Fontane described in his work “Walks through the Mark Brandenburg.” In the Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide, visitors can also explore the landscape on electrically assisted fat bikes, including on unpaved, often sandy paths. This allows visitors to experience the local flora and fauna with minimal impact.

Culture and ways to shape your trip

In Wusterhausen, the baroque half-timbered house at Am Markt 3 is now home to the tourist information office, the Museum of Routes and the library. It is the town’s cultural centre. Alongside nature and outdoor activities, this adds a specific cultural destination and the history of routes to your list of things to discover.

If you prefer to explore a variety of themes, you can include routes, nature experiences and cultural destinations in your travel plans. That way, you can start by choosing the kind of stay you want, rather than relying on a general idea of the entire region.
