Beetzseeheide offers several tangible starting points for a trip: the churches in KetzĂĽr and Gortz, the KetzĂĽr post mill and a circular hiking trail linking three villages. The churches differ in their construction periods, furnishings and histories; the trail adds an active focus. This lets you choose between cultural history and time outdoors without having to make your stay about just one theme.

Village Churches with Different Historical Layers

The village church in KetzĂĽr has largely lavish, very well-preserved furnishings from the early 17th century. They include a painted wooden ceiling and wall paintings depicting Christ and the twelve apostles. The furnishings draw attention not only to the age of the building, but also to the images used to decorate the church interior.

The construction history of the KetzĂĽr church can also be read in stages: in the 15th century, the western section was raised above an irregular octagonal building with an apse dating from the 13th century, and a tower was added. The building thus brings together an older structural core and later alterations.

The village church in Gortz offers a different historical perspective. It is a late Gothic fieldstone building with brick edging, built between 1450 and 1500. The altar and pulpit date from the Baroque period; two twisted columns are decorated with vine leaves and ears of grain. The two bells also each have their own casting year: Christian Heintze cast one in 1718, and Daniel Heintze cast the other in 1740, both in Berlin. The construction period, decoration and history of the bells reveal different aspects of the village church in Gortz.

Hiking and Seasonal Windmill Tours

The Beetzseeheide circular hiking trail connects the villages of Butzow, KetzĂĽr and Gortz. It is 11.4 km long and passes through the Mittlere Havelniederung bird sanctuary. This brings together two specific planning considerations: the route links three villages and also passes through a protected area. Its length gives you a concrete point of reference when deciding how much space a longer hike should take up in your itinerary.

Tours of the KetzĂĽr post mill, led by millers, are scheduled for Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. during the mill season, from Easter Monday to mid-October. Before visiting, check whether tours are taking place that year. This lets you plan a visit to the mill around the stated season and your own travel priorities.
