Discover Teltow
Accommodation in Teltow
Teltow’s almost completely preserved Old Town, its Teltow turnip and the Teltow Canal give the town a distinct character shaped by urban history, regional cuisine and recreation. The town also has a local history museum and routes linked to trade, pilgrimage traditions and the division of Germany. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, food or time outdoors.
A Teltow speciality
The Teltow turnip is a Brandenburg speciality known beyond the region and grown specifically in Teltow. Its characteristically spicy flavour gives the town its own culinary accent. Harvesting begins in October; the turnip is used in regional restaurants and in private households. The harvest season and local use give the turnip a special place among Teltow’s attractions: it is not just a regional dish, but a speciality explicitly associated with the town. If regional cuisine is one of your travel interests, it offers a tangible introduction to Teltow’s culinary character.
Old Town and urban history
Teltow’s Old Town is one of the few Märkisch farming towns in the Berlin area to have survived almost completely intact. The town’s local history museum complements this historic character with a look at the town’s history and everyday life: it documents how earlier generations lived, worked and spent their leisure time. Teltow’s history is presented through a model of the town; the museum also illustrates domestic life and craftsmanship in past centuries. The model and insights into home and working life bring different aspects of the town’s history to life, from its development to the everyday lives of its residents.
St Andrew’s Church also reflects a specific historical change. After the town fire of 1801, its interior was redesigned in a Neo-Gothic style with a Classical influence, following the plans of Prussian architect Karl-Friedrich Schinkel. A flat ceiling was installed in the nave. The combination of these styles shapes the description of the interior. The Old Rectory contains historically significant archaeological finds, including an old oven. Together, these subjects offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history, urban development or everyday life in the past.
Historic routes and border history
Teltow lies on the Via Imperii Way of St James, a rediscovered medieval trade route. The town is also on the Brandenburg Way of St James from Berlin to Leipzig via Teltow, which is designated as a separate section. These names connect a stay here with pilgrimage traditions and trade history. The Berlin Wall Trail offers a different historical focus: the former inner German border takes centre stage here.
A town announcement dated 30 June 2026 describes an upgraded section of the Berlin Wall Trail, around two kilometres long, between Japaneck and Lichterfelder Allee. It follows the former inner German border and connects Berlin’s Steglitz-Zehlendorf district with the Brandenburg town of Teltow. The section brings history to life for visitors while also providing open space for recreation and socialising, including at the Cherry Blossom Avenue. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish this from the Ways of St James: those routes are associated with trade and pilgrimage, while the described section of the Berlin Wall Trail combines border history with open space.
Teltow Canal and town harbour
Today, the Teltow Canal is a recreational area with numerous industrial heritage sites to discover. It adds another dimension to the town’s historic sites: industrial history in a setting that also offers opportunities for recreation. The town harbour is very close to Teltow’s Old Town. Its facilities include 39 boat moorings, a harbourmaster’s office and a dining establishment. The Old Town and harbour offer different ways to explore the area, each with its own distinct features.
When choosing accommodation, the mix you want from your trip can make all the difference: would you like Teltow’s Old Town and its historic attractions to take centre stage, or are you more interested in the Teltow Canal as a recreational area? This distinction can help you tailor your search to your interests without assuming a fixed itinerary.
