Zauchwitz between forests, lakes and history
Accommodation in Zauchwitz
Zauchwitz combines forests and extensive shallow lakes in the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park with opportunities for walking. The village is also on the Beelitz Asparagus Route and at the intersection of two long-distance cycle routes. The Swedish Church adds a distinctive piece of local history, with its Luther Rose also appearing in the village coat of arms. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: the landscape, routes and a specific historical feature.
Forests, shallow lakes and walking trails
Forests and extensive shallow lakes shape the landscape around Zauchwitz. Its location in the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park provides a clear setting for this natural environment, and there are opportunities for walking in the surrounding area. If you enjoy getting around on foot, you can make the trails through the landscape the focus of your stay. Forests and shallow lakes are the two distinctive features of the natural experience: rather than planning around just one attraction, the surroundings themselves take centre stage.
Cycle routes and connections
Zauchwitz is on the Beelitz Asparagus Route and at the intersection of two long-distance cycle routes. These add further route options to the walking opportunities. If cycling is a key part of your stay, you can take these routes into account when choosing your destination; if you mainly want to get around on foot, you can focus instead on the walking opportunities in the surrounding landscape. These different interests can help you decide what kind of trip you want, without losing sight of the natural environment and local history.
The Swedish Church and the Luther Rose
The Swedish Church in Zauchwitz was rebuilt after the Thirty Years’ War. A Luther Rose still stands on its altar, and also appears in the village coat of arms. During restoration work in the early 1990s, medieval ornamental window frames were also uncovered. The church’s history thus brings together its post-war reconstruction, a symbol that also features in the village coat of arms, and a medieval detail discovered during restoration.
Asparagus season in the Beelitz area
The Beelitz asparagus season is a seasonal culinary highlight tied to the harvest. Asparagus is grown at the Spargelhof am Storchennest farm in the Nature Park’s forest- and lake-rich surroundings. The history of asparagus cultivation is also part of the wider Beelitz destination: in 1861, Beelitz farmer Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Herrmann was the first to grow asparagus on a field scale; other Beelitz residents gradually followed his example. In Beelitz, a seasonal food tradition and a specific historical starting point for asparagus cultivation thus go hand in hand.
Beelitz: city history and leisure
The wider destination of Beelitz adds its own city history to the picture of Zauchwitz. Beelitz Parish Church was first mentioned in a document in 1247 and was originally a Romanesque pillar basilica built from hewn fieldstones. The Holy Blood legend made Beelitz the first pilgrimage site in the area east of the Elbe and possibly also in the German-speaking world; a chapel was built around 1340. The approximately 800-year-old historic centre of Beelitz, with its historic buildings, invites exploration. The Ernst Vogel watermill is located at the edge of the old town, on Mühlenstraße.
Leisure activities are also part of the Beelitz area. The Activity Park in Beelitz Water Tower Park combines the historic vegetation around the water tower with new facilities, bringing the grounds to life with paths and features for exercise, play and relaxation. The skate park in Water Tower Park includes a bowl, a quarterpipe, a plaza, a graffiti wall, trampolines and a “chill area”. Individual facilities and features may change.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests
Asparagus season and city history broaden the picture to include Beelitz as a wider destination. You can therefore tailor your accommodation search to the interests you want to shape your stay.
