Groß Schacksdorf-Simmersdorf can be explored through two specific interests: architectural and local history, and landscapes and trails. In Groß Schacksdorf, the medieval village church and Baroque castle take centre stage; the local history room adds insights into school history, nature and past ways of life. When planning your trip, you can weigh up cultural themes and outdoor activities.

Ponds, nature and trails

The area around Groß Schacksdorf is surrounded by more than 20 ponds. The landscape is considered rich in flora and fauna. Hiking, cycling and horse-riding trails are available in the Groß Schacksdorf-Simmersdorf area. The three types of trails offer different ways to spend time outdoors; you can decide which ones will shape your stay according to your interests.

For geographical orientation: Simmersdorf lies on the B115 between Forst (Lausitz) and Döbern.

Village church and manor houses

The village church in Groß Schacksdorf dates from the 14th century. After being destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, it was rebuilt on the old foundations between 1719 and 1721. The solid, plastered building has a hexagonal shape and is made of mixed masonry comprising brick, fieldstone and bog iron. The building thus brings together medieval origins and a reconstruction in the early 18th century.

Schacksdorf Castle was built around 1725 on the walls of an earlier moated castle. It is considered one of the oldest surviving manor houses in the region. Many original details have been preserved; notable features include the great hall and historic staircase. Opposite the manor house, a robber-knight gate displays three copies of knightly trophies based on an original by Klinge.

Schacksdorf Castle has been a venue for cultural events for years. Visits to the castle are only possible as part of the scheduled programme. If you are planning a visit, check before your trip which programme events are available.

Simmersdorf also has a former manor house. Baroque vaults, stucco ceilings and remnants of illusionistic architectural painting have been preserved there. The building is considered an example of rural Saxon Baroque architecture. These features add another perspective on the Baroque period to the destination’s architectural history.

Insights at the local history room

The Groß Schacksdorf local history room is housed in rooms in a school building inaugurated in 1907. It presents local school history and the area’s flora and fauna. It also documents local culture and ways of life from the 19th to the 20th century. Together, these topics offer insights into nature, education and everyday life over an extended historical period.

Themed guided tours are available for travel groups and guests attending family celebrations, by prior arrangement or on request. If you would like to include such a tour in your plans, arrange your visit in advance.

More perspectives in the wider destination of Spree-Neiße

The wider destination of Spree-Neiße offers other distinct themes. The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is a 17-hectare park where visitors can admire tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. The Spree Cycle Route crosses the Spree-Neiße region for about 60 kilometres and runs mostly along paved river dikes. Garden culture and a regional cycling route thus offer different ways to shape a stay in Spree-Neiße.
