Teltow-Fläming offers many different reasons to plan a trip: a working furnace in a glass museum, monastic history and regional collections sit alongside sporting destinations and landscapes. If you’re planning a trip around a range of interests, it’s worth choosing a focus first. Would you like to explore craftsmanship and history, spend time outdoors, or combine both?

Glass, monasteries and regional history

In the settlement of Baruther Glashütte, the museum and craftsmanship are closely linked: it is home to a living glass museum with a working furnace. Traditional workshops produce one-of-a-kind pieces and small series. The site is also a monument of European significance. At Baruther Glashütte, the history of the site and the production of glass come together.

At Kloster Zinna, too, history is paired with a practical demonstration: the monastery museum and distillery introduce visitors to the history of the former Cistercian monastery and show how the essences for the herbal liqueur “Klosterbruder” are made. The weaving museum offers a different focus. It displays historic handlooms and textile art; practical demonstrations are also part of the museum experience.

In Jüterbog, the museum in the Franciscan monastery explores its themes across three floors: regional archaeology, Reformation history and the city’s military history. The historic old town is another visitor attraction. Those interested in the development of technology and mobility can explore the history of the city, vehicle manufacturing and engines at MUST – Museum of Urban History and Technology in Ludwigsfelde. The Oskar Barnack Museum in Lynow offers a more focused look at the history of technology: it is dedicated to the inventor of the Leica 35 mm camera and its associated 24 x 36 mm film, and offers insights into the history of photography.

Other museums have their own distinct focus. The Blankensee Farm Museum is housed in a Brandenburg-style central-hall farmhouse dating from 1649 and depicts village life in that era. The Jänickendorf Museum Barn portrays rural life over the past 200 years through historic household items and agricultural equipment. The Red Cross Museum in Luckenwalde provides an overview of the Red Cross’s nearly 150-year history in the region. In Großbeeren, the memorial tower focuses on the liberation movement around 1813 and a diorama of the Battle of Großbeeren.

Art, literature and activity

There are also various ways to explore art and literature. The NEUE GALERIE in Wünsdorf-Waldstadt presents constantly changing exhibitions across different genres of contemporary art. The Theodor Fontane Cabinet is dedicated to Fontane’s “Wanderings through the Margraviate of Brandenburg” in a permanent exhibition. In Jüterbog, the Fläming Culture Days are a cultural offering; the same is true of the Kloster Zinna Summer Music events in Kloster Zinna. Check the dates before your trip.

For active days, the district offers almost 600 kilometres of tourist cycling routes. The Skate Arena Jüterbog is located directly on the Fläming-Skate and attracts elite athletes from across Europe. The Fläming-Skate is maintained and regularly cleaned by Teltow-Fläming District; check the route conditions before setting out. If you plan to visit FlämingWalk, you can get there by train via the Woltersdorf and Luckenwalde stops. Check train connections before travelling.

Another way to discover the landscape is the Boden-Geo-Pfad trail through the Sperenberg gypsum quarries and Klausdorf clay pits. The twelve-kilometre trail opened in June 2008 and provides information about the soil and the formation and use of the Sperenberg gypsum quarries. As maintenance work has not yet been completed, it is currently only accessible to a limited extent. The landscape itself also offers a variety of perspectives: Teltow-Fläming encompasses gently rolling ridges, wide valleys, hills and lowlands. Visitors can experience the local flora and fauna up close. The district also includes 30,414 hectares of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park.
