Bremen combines UNESCO World Heritage, historic lanes, museums and green spaces with experiences on the Weser. In Bremerhaven, exhibitions and maritime impressions add to the mix. This allows you to plan your stay around the themes that interest you most—from urban history and plant life to shipping and cycling.

History and cityscapes in Bremen

Bremen’s Town Hall and the Roland statue stand on the Market Square as symbols of civic autonomy and sovereignty as they developed in the European Holy Roman Empire. Together, they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2004. The original sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians also stands by the Town Hall. In the Schnoor district, Bremen’s oldest quarter, a maze of lanes winds between small houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Böttcherstraße adds a different architectural note with its buildings: they are a rare example of Expressionist architecture and rank among the city’s main attractions.

Bremen-Info is also located on Böttcherstraße. There, you can get personal advice for your stay in Bremen, free information materials, tips on tours and souvenirs. If you have questions about planning your trip, you’ll find a point of contact here, in a place where the street’s distinctive architecture also shapes the view of Bremen.

Museums and maritime perspectives

Universum Bremen is an interactive museum housed in a whale-shaped science centre. Its main themes are people, nature and technology. In Bremerhaven, the Klimahaus takes visitors along the eighth meridian through five continents and nine locations. The German Maritime Museum is located in Bremerhaven’s harbour area, right on the dike between the Old Harbour and the Weser. Their locations and themes offer different points of reference when planning visits focused on science, nature or maritime subjects.

Bremerhaven’s themes also include the history of migration. The opening of the German Emigration Center in 2005 laid the foundation for a migration museum in Germany. Initially, the museum presented the history of 7.2 million German and Eastern European emigrants who left for overseas via Bremerhaven between 1830 and 1974. In Bremen, the Übersee-Museum showcases the world’s cultural and natural regions across more than 10,000 square metres, including Asia, the African savannah and the Americas.

Green spaces and plant worlds

Bremen offers nature lovers two different garden experiences. Around 46 hectares of Bremen’s Rhododendron Park are home to more than 10,000 rhododendron and azalea shrubs. The 3.2-hectare Botanical Garden lies in the middle of the park. Its scientifically focused collection includes more than 6,500 different plants from Bremen and around the world. At the botanika Discovery Centre, interactive stations and exhibits also bring visitors closer to the world of plants and animals.

Together with the neighbouring Stadtwald, Bürgerpark forms Bremen’s largest continuous park. This green oasis covers 200 hectares and offers numerous leisure facilities close to the main railway station. The green destinations therefore differ in character: here, extensive parkland and leisure activities complement a botanical collection with a scientific focus.

The Weser, cycling route and regional experiences

A 91-kilometre section of the Weser Cycle Route connects Bremen and Bremerhaven. Route conditions may change; check the latest information before setting off. In the city of Bremen, the Weser ferry runs between Pusdorf and Ăśberseestadt. As its seasonal service may change, it is advisable to check the timetable before your trip.

From May to September, you can take the MS Oceana along the Weser from Bremen to Bremerhaven and back. The route passes Martinianleger, Pier 2, Mittelsbüren, Vegesack, Blumenthal, Farge, Brake and Nordenham Unionpapier before reaching the Seebäderkaje in Bremerhaven. Check departure times in advance if you are planning this seasonal trip.

There are also local insights to be found around fish and beer. At the Schaufenster Fischereihafen in Bremerhaven, fish is smoked live; at the Seefischkochstudio, you can get tips on preparing fish properly at home. The Beck’s brewery tour in Bremen takes you through the museum, raw materials room and brewhouse, and past malt silos and fermentation and storage tanks. It ends with a beer tasting in the guest room.

Tailor your stay to your interests

When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first: Bremen centres on World Heritage, historic districts and green spaces; Bremerhaven offers, among other things, themes related to climate, shipping and emigration, as well as insights into its fishing harbour. If you want to include both cities, the cycling route and the seasonal MS Oceana trip are two specific options to shape your plans around.
