Saarland invites you to discover a range of very different places: the Saarschleife, with its sweeping view from the Cloef, Lake Bostalsee in the low mountain landscape, and impressive evidence of industrial and Roman history. Nature, too, reveals different sides. In the southeast, the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve lies on the border with France and Rhineland-Palatinate. The right accommodation for you will therefore also depend on whether nature, water, hiking or culture is the main focus of your stay.

Landscapes by the water and in the Bliesgau

The Bliesgau is home to around 80 percent of Saarland’s population of little owls, a species threatened with extinction. The Saarschleife offers a different landscape: it is a landmark of Saarland and can be viewed from the Cloef lookout point. The Saarschleife and Cloef have been designated National Geotopes since 2006.

Lake Bostalsee covers 120 hectares and lies in Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park, surrounded by low mountain scenery. Two large sandy beaches and sunbathing lawns offer space for swimming, beach volleyball and building sandcastles. Stand-up paddleboarding is also available; two-hour beginner courses are offered directly at the lake. If you plan to take a course, check current availability before you travel.

Industrial heritage and Roman history

In Völklingen, the Völklingen Ironworks combines a striking industrial site with UNESCO World Heritage status: UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in December 1994. A well-signposted network of paths, 7,000 metres in length, leads through the site. There is a convenient landmark for travelling by train: the ironworks are a five-minute walk from Völklingen station. Saarbrücken Central Station, with IC, ICE and TGV services, is ten minutes by train from Völklingen. Check the current timetable for your journey.

The Roman sites each have their own distinctive appeal. The Roman Villa Borg hosts events and celebrations for all ages throughout the year, including baking experiences, Roman Days and “Cooking Like the Romans.” Tours are available in German, French, English, Dutch and Luxembourgish. At the Roman Villa Nennig, the mosaic floor covers 160 square metres. It is considered the largest mosaic discovered to date north of the Alps and is one of Saarland’s most significant archaeological monuments. Explore the grounds of the former villa, including the mosaic and the large burial mound within walking distance.

On foot, on the water and by bike

Many hikes begin at the Cloef lookout point. These include the Cloef Trail, which descends through the Steinbach Valley to the Saar. If you are interested in the Saarschleife Treetop Walk, you will find a 1,250-metre-long path with learning and adventure stations. The 42-metre-high observation tower is fully accessible without steps, and the path’s design offers improved accessibility.

For hikers on the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig, five Nature Campgrounds between Perl and Wadern offer places to stay overnight along the way. Cross-border cycling routes also run along the French border in Saarland. So, alongside cultural sites and trips to the water, hiking and cycling are other possible focuses for your visit. When planning an overnight stay at a campground, check current booking availability; for a cycling trip, check the route you want to take.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests

The Völklingen Ironworks and Völklingen station offer a convenient reference point for industrial heritage and train travel; Lake Bostalsee is ideal for days by the water, while the Cloef and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig cater to hiking interests. You can explore Roman history at Villa Borg or admire the mosaic in Nennig. Match your accommodation’s location to the destinations that matter most to you, rather than assuming one base will suit every travel idea. This lets you tailor your search to the mix of nature, activities and culture you want.
