Lampertheim between the Old Rhine, trails and the cathedral
Accommodation in Lampertheim
The protected Lampertheim Old Rhine, the landscapes of Biedensand and Bonaue, and the distinctive cathedral give Lampertheim a character shaped by both nature and urban culture. Hiking, wildlife observation and asparagus-themed offerings add further highlights. When planning your trip, consider whether you primarily want to spend time outdoors, explore the town’s history or arrive by motorhome.
Old Rhine, forest and hiking trails
Lampertheim’s flood-shaped landscapes include the protected Lampertheim Old Rhine as well as Biedensand and Bonaue. The Lampertheim Forest is a different kind of natural area: its glacial dune crests shape the terrain, and it is one of the largest contiguous forest areas on the Rhine Plain. The river landscape and forest offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
The Geopark Information Centre in Lampertheim provides information about starting points for hikes focused on cultural and landscape history, wildlife observation and events. Four hiking car parks also serve as starting points for walks. If you would like to choose a route, there are two circular trails of different lengths and with different themes: LA 1 Mittendrin is 8.6 kilometres long, suitable for beginners and combines sightseeing with immersing yourself in the Biedensand landscape.
Another circular route in Lampertheim is 7.5 kilometres long and suitable for hiking and jogging. Information boards along the way explain historical background as well as local flora and fauna. This makes it easy to choose based on the activity you have in mind: LA 1 explicitly combines its route with Biedensand and sightseeing, while the second route includes information about hiking, jogging and the topics covered by the boards.
For cycling, the Rheinschleife connects the Bergstraße with the Rhine and leads to the Old Rhine near Lampertheim. There are eight stations in the town where bicycles can be rented and returned. The system also allows you to return a bicycle in another town, including Mannheim. As information about bicycle rentals and the station network may change, it is best to check the latest details before your trip.
Cathedral, bird park and asparagus
The cathedral is a distinctive landmark of Lampertheim, known for its finely detailed neo-Gothic architecture. It is also called the “Cathedral of the Ried”. Construction began on 14 May 1863; after five and a half years of building work, the church was consecrated on 18 October 1868. Its architecture and history offer a different focus for exploring the town than the trails through the forest and floodplain landscape.
Since 1955, Lampertheim Bird Park has been a destination for visitors of all generations. The animal area is being restructured, so check current visitor access before your visit.
Lampertheim asparagus is often sold directly by producers in farm shops or asparagus huts. The asparagus hike between Lampertheim and Bürstadt also celebrates this regional product: this annual event has grown into an attraction drawing visitors from beyond the region, with a culinary, informative and artistic programme. Check the latest event dates before your trip.
A base for your stay
If you are travelling by motorhome, the An den Biedensand Bädern motorhome site is one option: it is open year-round, next to Lampertheim’s indoor and outdoor pools, and a few hundred metres from the town centre. Both its location by the pools and its distance from the centre are clearly stated. Visitor facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
More perspectives in the Bergstraße
In the wider Bergstraße destination, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald in the Bergstraße district. In Heppenheim, the “Wine & Stone” discovery trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and features around 70 information stations. The annual autumn hike along the trail takes place on 3 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hikers can enjoy wine and food at five stations in the vineyards; check the event details before your trip.
The Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory is another distinct experience in the wider Bergstraße destination. Families can explore it independently with a discovery kit containing activities, puzzles and experiments. Check the current opening conditions before your visit.
