Heppenheim (Bergstraße) brings together historic townscapes, wine-growing areas and themed trails. Sometimes the focus is on half-timbered houses and local history; at other times, on puzzles, exercise or the vineyard landscape. If you are looking for accommodation, these different themes can help you plan your stay: think about which experiences interest you most.

Old Town and Starkenburg: History in Specific Places

Heppenheim has a listed historic old town and more than 400 listed cultural monuments in total; many of them are in the old town’s half-timbered lanes. One prominent landmark in the town’s history is Starkenburg Castle: Lorsch Abbey built it in 1065 as a fortified castle on the 295-metre-high Schlossberg. It is one of the oldest castles in the western Odenwald.

The Heppenheim Museum is also housed in a historic complex of buildings. It is located in the Kurmainzer Amtshof, whose earliest construction phases date back to the 13th or 14th century. In the central building, the museum presents a permanent exhibition on the town’s history. The oldest part of the complex, known as the Saalbau, contains the Elector’s Hall, with Gothic angel frescoes and Renaissance wall paintings. Here, local history, earlier construction phases and different art styles come together in one place.

Trails with Different Themes

The Heppenheim Lantern Trail combines a walk through the old town with Hessian legends: more than 150 paper-cut silhouettes on the old town’s lanterns depict the stories. Visitors can explore the trail on their own. If you are more interested in astronomy, the Planet Trail features 13 bilingual signs about planets, minor planets, comets and the Milky Way. The route runs for about two kilometres from the Tourist Information Centre to the Starkenburg Observatory.

The Wine & Stone Discovery Trail has a different focus. It leads through Heppenheim’s wine-growing areas, is 6.9 kilometres long and features around 70 information stations. The trails are easy to distinguish by their themes and stated lengths: the Planet Trail explores the solar system and outer space, while Wine & Stone places its stations among the vineyards. Heppenheim Tourist Information also offers themed guided tours of the historic old town, Starkenburg Castle, the wine-growing areas and the Lantern Trail. If a guided tour fits your plans, check the current offering in advance.

Exercise and Outdoor Discoveries

The Bruchsee local recreation area lies in the south of Heppenheim. It has walking paths for jogging and relaxation, as well as an outdoor fitness circuit and a fitness trail. At the Bruchsee orchard meadow, children can explore an educational trail featuring an apple-thief quiz. This area therefore offers both exercise and a playful way to learn about the orchard meadow.

The trails’ themes provide a simple way to choose between them: lanterns tell legends, the Planet Trail’s stations cover astronomical topics, and Wine & Stone leads through the vineyards. The stated distances also make it easy to compare their lengths. This lets you plan your outings according to your interests and the time available.

Wine Shapes Heppenheim and the Bergstraße

Heppenheim has 180 hectares of vineyards and is the largest wine-growing town on the Bergstraße. In the wider Bergstraße travel region, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. The Bergsträßer Wine Trail Hike, which can start in Heppenheim, offers a special insight into winegrowing. Along the route, there are six tasting stands serving wines, sparkling wines and Seccos from the Hessische Bergstraße. Before travelling, check the details for the current edition of the event.

Heppenheim as a Starting Point for Your Plans
