Sinntal-Weichersbach combines hiking trails with a landscape of dry grasslands, fresh meadows and woodland. It also features traces of a long mill history and trails with a variety of themes and lengths. You can tailor your stay to suit whether you prefer to explore on foot, plan a cycling tour or are interested in the history of the village.

Hiking trails with different themes

The 6 km Weichersbach Circular Trail is designed as a nature and history trail. It lies in the northern part of the village and starts in the centre on SchulwaldstraĂźe. The 5.3 km Green Trail, an agricultural educational trail in the western part of Weichersbach, also starts in the village centre. The routes differ not only in length but also in theme: one focuses on nature and history, the other on agriculture.

The Three Castles Trail offers a longer loop: this approximately 18 km circular route starts at Schwarzenfels Castle and passes through Weichersbach and the surrounding countryside. Its listed stops include the ruins of Steckelsburg Castle and the Ulrich von Hutten Trail. For planning a day out, the 5.3 km educational trail, the 6 km circular trail and the approximately 18 km route offer a useful comparison. The right trail depends on the theme and distance you have in mind.

Cyclists can also follow a route with a clearly described course: the 203 km Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2 passes through Sinntal-Weichersbach, between Sinntal-Mottgers and Sinntal-Oberzell. After an easy descent to Weichersbach, the Sinntal Loop continues uphill to Schwarzenfels Castle and the village of the same name. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Meadows, woodland and mill traces

The 126.41-hectare “Dry Grasslands near Weichersbach and Other Areas” FFH site includes extensive, extensively managed dry grasslands and fresh meadows on shell limestone. The circular trail at the foot of the Stoppelsberg offers a different landscape: the designated nature reserve is characterised by dense deciduous woodland and is also home to the striking Schlangenritz rock formation.

The circular trail passes the former Keilmühle mill. Paper was produced there for more than 400 years, until production ended in 1983 following a boiler fire. Another trace of the area’s milling history is the Weichersbach Biemühle, a historic watermill that is largely preserved and still operational. The two sites represent different aspects of mill history: the former Keilmühle’s long paper-making tradition and the preserved historic watermill.

History and village life

The extensively renovated vaulted cellar dating from the 14th century is thought to have been the first dwelling and thus the origin of a settlement in Weichersbach. The natural history museum also has a specific connection to local history: its many taxidermied animals come from the estate of hunter and falconer Rudolf Kutzke, who died in the summer of 2013. By arrangement, the village blacksmith can introduce you to the art of blacksmithing.

Recurring events are also part of village life throughout the year. The traditional fair is held annually; the fair in a marquee has been established since 2010. The traditional Backfisch festival is celebrated once a year at the sports ground. If you are planning to attend one of the festivals, check the latest event dates. Church services are held at Weichersbach Church on Sundays and public holidays, alternating with Mottgers and Schwarzenfels. Service times rotate between 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00; check the relevant date in advance.

Sinntal beyond Weichersbach

The wider destination of Sinntal also offers its own natural and cultural attractions. In Sinntal-Altengronau, the Sinnwiesen nature reserve extends as far as Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. The annual Chess Flower Festival is held in Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours offer a chance to explore the meadows. Timing and organisation may vary.

Another example is the Old Jewish Cemetery near Sinntal-Altengronau, a historic cultural monument with more than 1,400 identified gravestones. The first graves were laid out in 1680, and the cemetery has been preserved in its original condition. Religious calendar restrictions apply to visits, so check the latest information beforehand. These destinations are part of the wider Sinntal destination and should be distinguished from Weichersbach’s own features.

When looking for accommodation in Weichersbach, you can consider what you want to focus on during your stay: local hiking trails, the longer Three Castles loop, cycling or mill history each offer a different angle for planning your trip.
