Discover Sinntal: chess flower meadows, trails and history
Accommodation in Sinntal
In Sinntal, flower-filled meadows, hiking trails and traces of a long local history come together. You can choose between outdoor nature experiences, a visit to the water and historic destinations.
Chess flower meadows and hiking trails
The Sinnwiesen nature reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. Flowering is seasonal and weather-dependent. If you would like to plan a trip around it, there are various cycling and hiking trails from which you can admire the meadows. One example is the paved cycle and pedestrian path from Altengronau to Jossa. The Chess Flower Festival is held annually in Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours offer a chance to explore the meadows. Check dates and event details before your trip.
There are also hiking routes of different lengths through varied landscapes. The almost 14-kilometre Spessartfährte Quellwinkel Kinzig is a circular route from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz and passes through two nature reserves. Along the way, open landscapes alternate with wooded slopes; the heights around the source of the Kinzig offer wide views towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg. Numerous orchid species grow right beside the trail in the Stephanskuppe and Weiperzberg nature reserves.
A shorter circular route option is the almost six-kilometre Spessartspur Jossa-Sinn-Blick. It starts at the sports ground in Sinntal-Jossa and passes a shelter with a barbecue area on the hilltop above Jossa, a state-recognised health resort. Comparing the stated route lengths can help you choose a route of the desired distance while keeping the different landscapes in mind. At the source area of the Kinzig near Sterbfritz, tables and benches invite you to take a break overlooking the orchards. The Three Castles Trail also starts there, running from Sterbfritz to SchlĂĽchtern and connecting Schwarzenfels Castle, Steckelberg Castle ruins and Brandenstein Castle.
The region also has a notable high point in Sinntal: the highest mountain in the Main-Kinzig district, at 585 metres, is located here.
Water and nature watching
Altengronau natural swimming pool has a water area of 680 square metres. Facilities listed include a sandstone diving rock, a slide hill, a children’s water playground and a waterfall; there is also a children’s playground and a table tennis table. Grassy sunbathing areas, wooden decks and reclining loungers round out the facilities. If the natural swimming pool is an important part of your travel plans, check its seasonal opening hours before you arrive.
Wooden benches and tables are available at Willingsgrundweiher. In addition to beaver lodges, with patience and luck you may also spot beavers; the animals are active at dusk and at night. The SchlĂĽchtern Forestry Office offers guided tours of the beaver information trail on request. The trail runs around Willingsgrundweiher near Sinntal-Breunings, providing different ways to learn about beavers, from observing nature to joining a requested guided tour.
History and special dates
The Old Jewish Cemetery near Sinntal-Altengronau is a historic cultural monument with more than 1,400 identified gravestones. The first graves were laid out in 1680; the cemetery has been preserved in its original state. Access is subject to restrictions based on the religious calendar. So check the current access information before visiting.
Relics of a church more than 500 years old are preserved in the Church of the Ascension in Sinntal-Altengronau. These include a sacrament niche made from a section of the old church wall that was incorporated into the new building. Those interested in architectural and local history will find a tangible detail here that connects the past with the present-day church.
Schwarzenfels Castle also offers a reason to plan your stay around a particular date: its Christmas market is held annually on the first weekend of Advent. The castle also offers panoramic views of the surrounding forests. If you are planning a trip specifically for the market, check the dates and details for the year in question.
Choose accommodation based on the experiences you have planned
When looking for accommodation in Sinntal, start with the experiences that matter to you: the chess flower bloom and festival in Altengronau, a hike on the longer Quellwinkel-Kinzig circular route, the shorter Jossa-Sinn-Blick loop or time at the natural swimming pool. If you are more interested in history, the cemetery, church and castle offer other points of interest. Focus your search on the place and activities that will be central to your stay. That way, your choice is shaped by your own travel plans rather than by a general idea of what accommodation should offer.
