Hungen between the Horloff and culture
Accommodation in Hungen
Hungen lies among green fields and meadows along the Horloff, near the Wetterau Lake District and a large forest area. Waymarked trails, a landscape of ponds and cultural attractions give a stay different focuses: from outdoor activities and regional history to cheese-making.
Trails and nature around Hungen
Waymarked themed, circular and pilgrimage trails lead into the countryside. A destination in its own right is the Drei Teiche recreation area in the municipal forest between Hungen and Nonnenroth. There are shelters and benches, as well as developed cycling and hiking trails. Marked routes lead around the ponds; the area covers more than 15 hectares. This makes walks and bike rides different ways to plan time outdoors.
Rare bird species find a refuge at the Unterer Knappensee near Hungen-Utphe. There is also a birdwatching shelter in the area. This offers a different way to experience nature than the forest trails: here, the focus is on birdlife, while the routes around the Drei Teiche offer the chance to explore the landscape on foot or by bike.
Families who want to make cycling a central part of their trip have a clear option: the signposted cycle routes in the Wetterau Lake District have only gentle gradients and are suitable for families. For a longer ride, the 70-kilometre Residenzenring connects Hungen, Grünberg, Laubach and Lich. This multi-day tour takes you through shared history, culture and nature, offering a different experience from a trip along individual trails.
History, events and cheese
The Limes Information Centre at Hof Grass explains Roman settlement in Hesse and the district of Gießen through exhibition rooms and a digital presentation. The centre is accessible; texts are available in English, French and Braille. It offers an accessible introduction to the history of Roman settlement in the region.
Hungen Castle is a privately owned Baroque palace with event rooms. Cultural events such as concerts and readings take place in the Blue Hall. The palace is not generally open for interior visits, though residents occasionally open the rooms as part of events. Before visiting, check whether access is planned for the specific event.
At the Hungener Käsescheune, visitors can try their hand at cheese-making in small copper vats during cheese-making seminars. The cheese counter and shop sell homemade cheese specialities, matured cheeses and regional products. Those who want to include culture and regional produce in their travel plans will find a different focus here than at exhibitions and historic buildings.
Plan your trip and choose accommodation
From May to October, the Vogelsberger Vulkan-Express’s seasonal VB-92 route connects Hungen with the Hoherodskopf. It operates on weekends and public holidays and is aimed at hikers and cyclists. Bicycles and e-bikes are carried in trailers. Before travelling, check the latest service information and, if taking a bicycle, the capacity and reservation requirements.
When choosing accommodation, consider what kind of days would suit your travel group: time on hiking and cycling trails, trips to museums or a visit to an event. These priorities can help you decide what you want from your stay without having to fit every experience into a single day’s itinerary.
