The Hessian Highlands bring together experiences on the water, paths through beech forests and distinctive cultural sites. Swimming spots and water sports take center stage at Lake Edersee; ancient trees, rocks and springs shape the landscape of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Castles and exhibitions offer a different perspective on the region. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth first deciding whether you want to focus on the lake and nature or on culture.

Water, Forests and Wildlife Watching at Lake Edersee

Lake Edersee is a holiday destination in the Hessian Highlands, with swimming spots, water sports and other leisure activities. Options include sailing, surfing, motorboating, fishing and pedal boating. If you have specific water sports plans, check the latest conditions and offerings in advance.

At WildtierPark Edersee, you can currently see a total of 21 different native species. The park’s bird of prey center holds flying displays featuring birds of prey. From the accessible viewing platform, you can watch falcons, kites, owls, eagle-owls and vultures, among others, flying freely. The accessibility features apply to the viewing platform.

There are also different ways to explore the forest. Along the cycling and hiking trails in Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, you’ll find ancient beeches and oaks, moss-covered roots, unusual rock outcrops and clear springs. The blue of Lake Edersee glimmers through the trees again and again. The Urwaldsteig Edersee offers a different experience: the entire 66-kilometer route can be explored in eight stages with rangers from Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

The Edersee Visitor Center offers tourist information, the animated journey through time “Myth Edersee” and an attractive outdoor area. Alongside outdoor activities, visitors can also choose from information services and an exhibition about the lake’s history. It is a good idea to check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Exhibitions, Castles and History

The Visionarium Diemelsee is a two-story interactive experience exhibition about Lake Diemelsee, water, people and nature. Hands-on stations invite visitors not just to look at the topics, but to engage with them actively. Its interactive format offers a different focus from the historical rooms and collections of the castles.

At Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, monumental water features and the widely visible Hercules monument bring together the elements of absolutist landscape architecture and a Baroque gesamtkunstwerk in an impressive way. The artificial Löwenburg castle ruin lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Bergpark. It was built between 1793 and 1801 as a pleasure palace, not as a fortress. This distinction makes the building a special example of historic castle architecture.

In Bad Wildungen, the Museum Schloss Friedrichstein houses the military and hunting history section of the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel. The collection includes weapons, uniforms, orders and paintings from the 16th to the 19th century. The Turcica collection includes an elaborately decorated audience tent. Schloss Friedrichstein can only be visited as part of a guided tour; the last tour begins at 3:30 p.m. Check the operator’s latest visitor information before your trip.

Marburg Landgrave Castle is a medieval residence of the Hessian landgraves and now houses a museum with historic rooms. Bus route 10 goes up to the castle. As routes may change, it is advisable to check the current connection before setting off.

When looking for accommodation, your preferred focus for the trip is a good first filter: Lake Edersee and the national park offer experiences centered on water and nature, while Bergpark, castles and museums add cultural and historical highlights.
