For tourism, Werra-Meißner-Kreis is part of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Wald, diverse landscapes and a wide variety of geology come together; the flora and fauna are also diverse. Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is considered the home of Frau Holle. The natural landscape and storytelling tradition give the district its own distinctive character—with experiences ranging from hiking trails and seasonal landscapes to cherry culture and relaxation.

Landscapes through the seasons

More than 35 percent of the area of Werra-Meißner-Kreis is designated as protected nature reserves. A large part of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land also belongs to Hotspot 17, one of only 30 areas nationwide with exceptional biological diversity.

Each season brings its own highlights: in the Witzenhausen cherry-growing region, cherry blossom coincides with orchid blossom; pink poppy fields seasonally transform Germerode and Grandenborn. Other seasonal highlights include Frau Holle’s flower meadows, autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of blossoms and autumn foliage varies from year to year. If you are planning your trip around a particular bloom, check its current status before making plans.

Hiking trails and cycling routes

There is a dense network of certified premium trails for hiking in Werra-Meißner-Kreis. The Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen trail also takes hikers to some of the most scenic areas in the Geo-Naturpark. Details for two routes in Meißner illustrate the range of distances: the Premiumweg P1 Hoher Meißner is 13.7 kilometres long and rated difficult. The Nordic Walking Park has four routes ranging from 6 to 12 kilometres, starting at Bergwildpark Meißner. The difficult rating applies to P1; for specific planning, it is advisable to check the local route information.

You can also explore a longer route by bicycle: in 2025, the approximately 300-kilometre Werratal-Radweg was awarded three stars as a quality route by the German Cyclists’ Association (ADFC). The three-star rating applies to 2025. When planning, you can choose between a hike with a stated difficulty rating, shorter Nordic walking routes and an extensive cycling route.

Cherries, nature experiences and culture

Around Witzenhausen, several activities combine cherry culture with local discoveries. The family-friendly Kirschenerlebnispfad in and around Witzenhausen has 17 stops: visitors can learn about cherries and their many varieties, try things out and experience the cultural landscape. Kirschwanderweg 3 offers insights into the last 100 years of cherry growing and, during blossom season, leads through old meadow orchards and new plantations. With its stops, the discovery trail therefore has a different focus from the hiking trail, which centres on the history of cherry growing.

At the cherry car park for Kirschwanderweg 3 on Burgberg in Witzenhausen, the Kirschkino shows a free film, just under 20 minutes long, about cherry growing in the Witzenhausen cherry-growing region, as well as other day-trip tips in the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. Access is seasonal; check when the cinema is open before your visit. A guided city tour presents Witzenhausen as a half-timbered town and cherry-growing town, its three churches and other historic architectural landmarks. It is worth checking in advance for specific dates and booking details.

Other experiences cater to a range of interests: the Tropengewächshaus for tropical useful plants in Witzenhausen offers special themed tours for groups, rallies for school classes and options for children’s birthday parties. Kletterwald Eschwege on Großer Leuchtberg has six well-secured courses in the treetops. The Geo-Naturpark’s events calendar lists guided hikes, nature experiences, family activities and themed tours around Hoher Meißner throughout the year. Individual dates are subject to the events calendar.

Thermal baths and choosing the right location

For a different kind of day out, visit WerratalTherme in Bad Sooden-Allendorf. Facilities and services there include a wave pool, a varied sauna area with an integrated graduation tower, a Dead Sea salt grotto, a programme of classes and 32°C brine water; massages are available on request. Individual facilities may be temporarily unavailable, and wellness services may change. If a particular facility is important for your visit, check its current status in advance.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first prioritise the experiences you want to shape your trip: cherry trails and a city tour in Witzenhausen, hiking on Hoher Meißner or a visit to WerratalTherme in Bad Sooden-Allendorf. These specific priorities can help guide your choice of location, without requiring every trip to follow the same daily itinerary. Then compare accommodation based on the locations of your planned activities.
