Schöffengrund brings together the history of its districts and trails through forest and farmland. Churches, half-timbered houses, historic buildings and even burial mounds give this destination a variety of distinctive features.

Village history in the districts

In Laufdorf, the history can be read in several buildings. The Protestant Church was first mentioned in a document in 1338 and is one of the oldest village churches in Hesse. As you stroll around, you can also discover well-preserved half-timbered buildings, some dating from the 17th century. The former school on Lahnstraße was built in 1908 and is the only surviving one of the four school buildings that once stood here. In Laufdorf, you can encounter traces of several centuries.

Oberquembach showcases a variety of construction methods: the Old School was built from rammed earth in 1839 and is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in the Lahn-Dill district. The bakehouse at Usinger Straße 8 is also one of the village’s well-preserved old buildings and is worth a visit. In Oberwetz, the old village centre is one of the best-preserved historic village centres in the southern Lahn-Dill district. To the right of Oberkleener Straße, about 300 metres from the edge of the village, lie 47 burial mounds from the Hallstatt period, dating from 750 to 450 BC.

In Schwalbach, the present-day Protestant Church was built between 1763 and 1767, after the old church collapsed in 1760. The oldest of its three bells dates from 1692. The Old Town Hall on Reiskirchener Straße is also one of the village’s sights. Schwalbach’s mineral spring, known for centuries, was first enclosed around the middle of the 16th century.

In Niederquembach, the church stands on a hillside above the old village centre, surrounded by the remains of an old cemetery wall. Above the framed entrance door of a building at Quembachallee 11a is the date 1707. Niederwetz has a motorcycle museum. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check in advance when it is open to visitors.

Countryside, views and trails

At 423 metres, Köhlerberg is the municipality’s highest point and offers panoramic views in every direction. Schöffengrund lies within the Taunus Nature Park. You can use the well-maintained forest and agricultural trails in Schöffengrund and neighbouring municipalities for hiking and cycling; the trail network also allows for routes covering many kilometres. This gives you flexibility in how you spend your time outdoors. If you are planning a particular route, check the trail conditions in advance.

Not every historic site is accessible: Grube Laubach mine and the Margarethe shaft in Laufdorf are now privately owned and no longer open to visitors. Schwalbach’s mineral spring is documented in historical records; its first enclosure dates from the middle of the 16th century.

Culture in the Lahn-Dill district

In the wider destination of the Lahn-Dill district, distinctive cultural sites offer further insights into the history of Schöffengrund. In Wetzlar, the Lottehaus recalls Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff in the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. In Dillenburg, Villa Grün displays objects and meticulously recreated scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms; the basement also features an elaborate, media-rich mining exhibition. Those interested in industrial heritage will find the Grube Fortuna mine in Solms-Oberbiel, the only Hessian anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The cultural attractions around Schöffengrund range from medieval castle ruins to Renaissance and Baroque palaces. The municipality’s Culture and Leisure page provides a link to the events calendar. Check the dates there when planning your trip.
