Explore Ehringshausen through its specific hiking trails, distinctive landscape features and the history of its districts. The Köhlerweg leads to the Koppe; longer routes take you to other named places in the municipality. When planning, you can compare the trails by distance, stated walking time and route, and combine local history with a visit to the local history museum.

Hiking Trails and the Koppe

The Köhlerweg is one of 19 certified premium circular trails. Its 12.4 kilometres can be completed in about 3.5 hours with a moderate level of fitness. The route crosses the slopes of Kölschhausen on its way to the Koppe, the highest point on the tour. Landscapes described along the way include open stream valleys north of Dreisbach and hillside meadows with views. The distance, approximate duration and route give you specific points of reference for planning a day’s hike.

The Koppe is an extinct volcano, 351 m high, and the highest elevation in the Kölschhausen district. It was the first nature reserve in the Wetzlar district. On its northern side, a column formation is exposed in an old quarry at a height of about 15 m. This prominent landscape feature is therefore both a geological landmark and a historically designated nature reserve.

Another hiking route is about 21 km long, has around 180 m of elevation change and passes through the forests of the formerly independent municipalities of Ehringshausen, Dillheim, Daubhausen and Greifenthal. The stated walking time is approximately six hours. This makes it possible to compare the tour’s duration with the Köhlerweg: the descriptions give an approximate time for both, but the routes differ in length.

The 23 km Ehringshausen Great Hiking Trail on the left bank of the Dill runs through the municipality’s woodland north of the Dill. It starts at the water reservoir in Katzenfurt, passes through Dreisbach, Niederlemp and Breitenbach, and returns to Katzenfurt via Kölschhausen. The 11.8 km Ehringshausen Great Hiking Trail on the right bank of the Dill takes a different route: from Daubhausen, it goes through Ehringshausen-Ichelhausen and the Ehringshausen and Daubhausen forests, along the Hohe Straße to Greifenthal-Steckenmesser, then back to Daubhausen through Greifenthal on the Historic Huguenot Trail. You can compare the stated lengths and routes of these two long-distance hiking trails.

Huguenot History and the Village Museum

The Historic Huguenot Trail begins in the district of Greifenthal. Its name points to the region’s history: in the early years after the Huguenot village of Greifenthal was founded, it had no cemetery of its own. The dead were therefore carried to the shared cemetery in Daubhausen. This tradition gives a trail starting point in Greifenthal a historical connection, without limiting the story to the hiking route.

The Ehringshausen Local History Museum also offers an insight into local history. Its themes include village history, old toys, and the life and work of Dr Hermann Huttel. Alongside the area’s historical connections, the museum’s exhibits explore various aspects of local life.

Cultural Attractions in the Lahn-Dill District

The wider destination of the Lahn-Dill district includes other independent attractions with different areas of focus. The Lottehaus in Wetzlar commemorates Goethe’s meeting with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” In Solms-Oberbiel, the Grube Fortuna visitor mine is the only anchor point in Hesse on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Villa Grün in Dillenburg displays objects and detailed recreations of industrial and craft production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms; the basement houses an elaborate, media-rich mining exhibition. In Wetzlar, the Optikparcours invites visitors to experiment and discover optical phenomena, including in a walk-through kaleidoscope. The Glockenwelt Greifenstein presents almost 100 bells on a tour through a thousand years of German bell history. These attractions broaden the range of cultural experiences and discoveries in the Lahn-Dill district, while Ehringshausen offers its own points of interest through its hiking trails and local history.

Choose the Right Focus

Trail lengths and stated walking times make it easier to compare hikes by how long they take; the local history museum and the story of Greifenthal add further insight into the area. If cultural attractions in the Lahn-Dill district are also part of your plans, you can include them as separate stops. This way, you can look for accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most during your trip.
