Gründau: Circular Trails, Views and Landscapes
Accommodation in Gründau
Marked circular trails invite you to discover Gründau with different time budgets: the Keilerweg leads uphill from Hasselweiher through Ronneburg Forest to Hasenkopf; the longest trail goes all the way to Ronneburg Castle, and the Ahornweg offers views as far as the Frankfurt skyline. The distance and walking time can help you choose a suitable route for the day.
Circular Trails with Different Perspectives
The longest circular hike starting at the hiking portal at Hasselweiher in Mittel-Gründau is marked with a white woodpecker on a green background. The route is about seven kilometres long and takes just under two hours to walk. It leads to Ronneburg Castle. At the edge of the forest, you can enjoy a view of the castle, and a bench invites you to take a break.
A shorter option is the circular trail marked with a boar: it is just over four kilometres long and takes a little more than an hour. The route climbs through Ronneburg Forest to Hasenkopf and returns to Hasselweiher via a panoramic trail above the Almessengrund. The two trails therefore differ not only in walking time but also in the waypoints described.
At the edge of the forest along the Ahornweg, several benches invite you to linger; from there, the view reaches as far as the Frankfurt skyline. For a different perspective on the municipality, there is the hiking route provisionally titled “Gründau50”. Hannes Schulz devised it for the anniversary “50 Years of Gründau 1972–2022”. It circles the municipal area and includes all seven districts.
The route of Gründau50 connects different landscapes and local areas: from Lieblos, it passes through the Kinzig floodplain and north through the Steinbach residential park to Hasselweiher on Reitzeberg. Through Mittel-Gründau, the route follows the Gründau, the stream that gave the municipality its name. The circular trails starting at Hasselweiher and the longer route covering all districts offer different scales for planning a hike.
More to Explore in the Main-Kinzig District
The wider destination of the Main-Kinzig District also offers distinctive nature and culture themes in various places. One landscape highlight is the traditional orchards stretching from Bergen-Enkheim to Maintal-Hochstadt: the area covers around 320 hectares, and some of its sunny slopes are protected. Blossoming trees and colourful meadows invite you to take walks and excursions in spring.
At Kinzigsee in Langenselbold, the focus is on the water. The bathing lake has a sandy beach and a large sunbathing lawn; activities available there include swimming, sunbathing, beach volleyball, sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Seasonal details may change. Check the current offerings before your visit.
For a cultural outing, visit the Gelnhausen Museum in the former Augustaschule on Obermarkt. Designed as a family-friendly hands-on museum, it gives children and adults the chance to experience history through touching, listening, smelling, taking part and trying things out, with guided tours, workshops, rallies and other educational activities. As programme details may change, it is a good idea to check the current programme before your visit.
In Bad Orb, the nine-metre-high Wartturm on Molkenberg combines views with hiking orientation: it is a lookout point and a starting point for hikes, with panoramic views over Bad Orb, the Spessart and the Vogelsberg. These different highlights—hiking trails, water, spring landscapes and interactive culture—show just how varied the themes are in the Main-Kinzig District.
