Ronneburg combines a medieval hilltop castle with historic festivals and circular hiking trails. Ronneburg Castle dates back to the 13th century and is one of the few hilltop castles preserved in its original condition. The Friends of Ronneburg association also offers an annual events programme. If you are planning a trip, you might first consider whether the castle’s history, a festival date or time on the trails should be the main focus.

Castle and Events Programme

For travellers interested in medieval architecture, the castle’s state of preservation is a particular highlight: it is not only a building dating from the 13th century, but also one of the few hilltop castles preserved in its original condition. It offers a tangible place to explore Ronneburg’s history.

The Friends of Ronneburg association’s annual programme includes historic markets and festivals. The Medieval Castle Festival in particular attracts many visitors from near and far. As dates for individual events may vary, it is worth checking the date you want before planning your trip. If a festival is the reason for your stay, the events calendar becomes an important part of planning your schedule.

Circular Hiking Trails and the Hill Country

Eleven circular hiking trails run mostly within Ronneburg’s municipal area and also pass through the neighbouring municipalities of Neuberg, Büdingen and Gründau. The route plan dates back to 2010; most of the route descriptions are still up to date. However, the trails are not marked with trail signs. So include the route descriptions in your trip planning rather than relying on signposting.

The Hot Spot paragliding school is also located right next to Ronneburg Castle in the Ronneburg hill country. This brings two different subjects together in one local setting: the preserved hilltop castle and paragliding. You can use this to set your own accommodation priorities: should your stay focus mainly on the castle and a festival date, or would you prefer to plan around the circular hiking trails?

More to Explore in the Main-Kinzig District

In the wider Main-Kinzig district, the options range from landscapes and culture to activities on the water. The River Kinzig rises in the north-east of the Main-Kinzig district near Sinntal-Sterbfritz and flows into the River Main at Hanau. The region’s landscapes also include an orchard area stretching from Bergen-Enkheim to Maintal-Hochstadt, covering around 320 hectares. Some of its sunny slopes are protected nature reserves; flowering trees and colourful meadows invite visitors to enjoy walks and outings in spring.

The Museum Gelnhausen, housed in the former Augustaschule at Obermarkt, offers a cultural experience in the region. Designed as a hands-on family museum, it lets children and adults explore history through touch, sound, smell, participation and experimentation during guided tours, workshops, scavenger hunts and other educational activities. The specific activities on offer may change.

Kinzigsee in Langenselbold offers a different kind of experience. This swimming lake has a sandy beach and a large sunbathing lawn; activities available there include swimming, sunbathing, beach volleyball, sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. If you are planning a day of swimming, it is worth checking the seasonal information.
