Rödermark: Nature and Stories Along the Way
Accommodation in Rödermark
Explore Rödermark along its trails: the Rodau nature trail combines nature topics with the river’s history, while the “Oane Wesch” cultural and historical trail makes texts accessible via QR code. Along the wumboR cycle route, artworks and distinctive landmarks add their own character. You can explore Rödermark through the themes that interest you most.
Follow the Rodau and understand how it has changed
The Rodau nature trail brings the river to life in the townscape of Urberach and Ober-Roden. The route is just under six kilometres long and includes 29 information boards. It starts at the permanently flowing spring at Rodauquelle playground in Urberach and ends near the wastewater treatment plant in Ober-Roden. The route stays within the two districts named above.
Twelve boards focus on nature in, on and around the Rodau. They cover conservation successes as well as fish, small animals, birds and plants. The topics draw attention to different aspects of the river and its surroundings. Those interested in observing nature will find a different focus here than on a walk devoted primarily to local history.
Changes to the watercourse are also part of the trail: its history includes four former mills on the banks and earlier stream courses. Straightening work in the 1930s was followed by renaturalisation, which began in 2009. Nature topics and historical developments sit side by side; the Rodau nature trail explores the river not only as a habitat, but also as a changing landscape.
Cultural history and art in the townscape
The “Oane Wesch” cultural and historical trail offers a different way to share local history. Its 56 stops have QR code boards; the texts can be accessed and listened to on a mobile phone. The trail therefore focuses on individual stops and mobile text-based interpretation, whereas the Rodau nature trail has information boards spread along a route just under six kilometres long.
Art is also part of Rödermark’s public landscape: 22 sculptures stand in the districts, on busy squares or at crossroads. On the Bulau, the wumboR cycle route passes the “Celtic Funeral Procession,” a steel sculpture by artist Kai Wujanz. A reconstructed section of a Roman road is also located on the Bulau.
Landmarks along the wumboR cycle route
Near Waldacker, the wumboR cycle route crosses the 50th parallel. Pillars display photos of cities along this line of latitude, making a geographical feature an engaging topic along the route. The route also passes the “Braaret Bernsche” and two installations on the Regionalparkroute.
The route’s landmarks each offer a different focus: on the Bulau, the sculpture takes centre stage; near Waldacker, it is the line of latitude and images of its cities. Together with the Rodau nature trail and “Oane Wesch,” they provide a range of starting points for a stay—from river nature and change to cultural history, art and geographical landmarks along the way.
