Frielendorf: Silbersee, Leisure and History
Accommodation in Frielendorf
Water, activity and rural culture give Frielendorf a varied character. Silbersee, leisure activities for a range of interests and the town’s history offer different themes to consider when planning your trip. As you decide what you want your stay to focus on, you can weigh up nature and water experiences, active pursuits and cultural discoveries.
Water landscapes and leisure at Silbersee
Silbersee covers 8.2 hectares and is 14 m deep at its deepest point. Its origins are closely connected with the history of mining: the lake was created in the 1980s through open-cast lignite mining and subsequently filled with groundwater. At Silbersee, the landscape and a history shaped by mining come together.
The water facilities also come with specific figures: the WellnessParadies am Silbersee has 151 m² of water surface and a 53 m-long waterslide. The Frielendorf outdoor pool offers just under 1,000 m² of water surface. The two facilities add different options to Frielendorf’s water-based attractions.
The small Silbersee-Bob amusement park is right on the shore of Silbersee. Its attractions include a bobsled track, boat rental, a playground, petting animals, a quad track, a Nautic Jet and a play beach. Some attractions may vary. Those interested in the different leisure options will find a wide mix of activities here, so a day need not be limited to just one kind of experience.
Another family attraction is Frielo-Land: under one roof, 2,200 m² of space contains attractions such as a bungee and trampoline facility, bumper boats, pool tables, a ball-shooting game, climbing frames and slides. There is a separate area for younger visitors. Details of the offer may change, so it is worth checking the operator’s latest information when planning your visit.
Cycling and a range of activities
Cycling in Frielendorf and the Silbersee Erlebniswelt takes you along paths through meadow valleys and beside rivers. More challenging cycling routes lead into the foothills and uplands of the Knüll. The emphasis is therefore on a range of landscapes and route profiles: you can tailor your trip to whether you prefer river valleys and meadows or a more physically demanding cycling experience. Frielendorf’s leisure activities also include hiking, swimming and wellness.
Village history, market and recognition as a spa resort
The Frielendorf Museum Shop recreates a rural village shop from the early 20th century, using historic furnishings from old Frielendorf shops. The displays bring the familiar everyday world of times past to life. The museum shop is open by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance.
The Ascension Day Market also brings history together with today’s entertainment. Its tradition has continued uninterrupted since Landgrave Karl granted it market privileges in 1694. Today, the market is above all a major leisure event, attracting thousands of visitors to Frielendorf every year. Another indication of the town’s character is its official recognition as a spa resort, which Frielendorf has held since 2000.
Further perspectives in the Schwalm-Eder district
The wider Schwalm-Eder district encompasses low mountain landscapes around the KnĂĽll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges. The Schwalm Cycle Path is a regional attraction in its own right: it is around 100 kilometres long and leads to the confluence of the Schwalm and Eder shortly before Felsberg. For the most part, it follows paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes of meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns.
The museums in the Schwalm-Eder district also offer their own cultural highlights. The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen explores 19th- and 20th-century art history and displays paintings featuring traditional Schwalm costume. The Schwalm Museum in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain presents pottery and ceramics traditionally used in the region in a reconstructed potter’s workshop. Alongside the experiences in Frielendorf, the wider destination therefore offers further options for art and culture enthusiasts.
