Bad Schwalbach brings together nature, spa and cultural themes. The moor railway and the moor pits, the Kneipp medicinal herb garden and the fountain trail offer different perspectives; the Alleesaal, Martin Luther Church and Spa Town Pharmacy Museum add specific local history. If you are looking for accommodation in Bad Schwalbach, one initial question can help you choose the focus of your trip: Are you most interested in moorland, medicinal herbs and fountains, or in architectural and spa history? These themes give your planning direction without requiring you to settle on just one focus.

Moor Railway and Moor Pits

Since 2001, the moor railway in Bad Schwalbach has once again been available as a tourist passenger service. The approximately ten-minute ride begins at “Moorbadehaus,” passes “Golfhaus,” “Schwalbenbrunnen” and “Waldsee,” and ends at the “Moorgruben” station. The duration gives you a specific time reference for planning your day; check the operator’s current operating days before your trip.

Two of the nine moor pits behind Waldsee are accessible via around 60 metres of paths and have been made accessible with Douglas fir boardwalks. This specific walking route offers a different planning scale from the approximately ten-minute moor railway ride: here, it is about a developed area to explore on foot, while the ride takes you between named stops. The type of experience can help you decide whether to focus on a ride or on the moor area accessible on foot.

Medicinal Herbs and Fountains

The Kneipp medicinal herb garden is located in Stahlbrunnental (Röthelbachtal) in Bad Schwalbach. Covering 200 m², it has twelve beds with more than 150 medicinal herbs. Its area, number of beds and collection of herbs give the theme a concrete framework: if you are interested in medicinal plants, you can include this focus in your travel plans.

The signposted fountain trail is a suggested circular walk that takes in Bad Schwalbach’s important fountains. The yellow-marked route passes the healing springs in the spa district; red arrows point to the fountains in the town centre. This distinguishes two spa-related themes: healing springs in the spa district and fountains in the town centre. Compared with the medicinal herb garden, the fountain trail offers a different focus and its own way of understanding the town’s spa themes.

Architectural and Spa History

The Alleesaal was built in 1820/21 in the Neoclassical style as the “Hotel de la Promenade” by private hotelier Grebert. Martin Luther Church also offers a historical highlight: it is Bad Schwalbach’s oldest architectural monument, and the year 1471 is inscribed above the choir entrance. The permanent exhibition at the Spa Town Pharmacy Museum is devoted to the spa and town history of Bad Schwalbach. The historical and cultural interest thus ranges from a Neoclassical building and the town’s oldest architectural monument to the history of the spa town and the municipality.

Regional Highlights in the Rheingau-Taunus District

The Rheingau-Taunus District is represented in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site through the municipal areas of RĂĽdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. Its cultural landscape is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terraced vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine. Another regional cultural attraction, the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, crosses the Rheingau-Taunus District for approximately 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. It runs for around 33 kilometres through the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park.

Viticulture and landscape are also represented in the Rheingau-Taunus District: the 14 Riesling Loops are circular routes between 4 and 8 kilometres long, running between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein. They focus on Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. Schloss Vollrads is located in Oestrich-Winkel; its courtyard houses the wine shop in the former coach house. During opening hours, you can taste wines there without an appointment. Check the opening hours in advance, as they may change.
