Hohenstein combines a striking castle with traces of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes and trails for culture and exercise. Hohenstein Castle is the municipality’s most historically significant site and its landmark. Its role as a historic centre continues in the cultural life of today: every year in June and July, the Taunusbühne stages theatre performances on the open-air stage in the inner courtyard; some seats are covered. During the Taunusbühne Bad Schwalbach season, the courtyard of the castle ruins also becomes the setting for the annual castle festival.

Castle and Limes: local cultural history

The Hofgut Georgenthal in Hohenstein houses the museum and information centre for the Limes World Heritage Site. Traces of the Limes can be found in the districts of Breithardt, Born and Steckenroth. Two circular trails offer different experiences: the five-kilometre Georgenthal Limes Circular Trail starts at the car park at Hofgut Georgenthal and has nine information panels. The 5.5-kilometre Hohenstein Limes Circular Trail takes in other visible Limes structures and has seven information panels. The route lengths and number of panels provide a clear guide when choosing a route.

Trails for exercise and exploring together

The family yoga trail combines a short 1.3-kilometre loop with a longer 2.4-kilometre loop. Both start at the information board by the community hall. Children and adults can try yoga exercises at 14 stations. The different route lengths and stations provide useful guidance for planning.

Those who prefer to learn and explore as they go can follow the nature trail, with interactive stations where visitors can take part in activities. It starts in Breithardt. The approximately 40-kilometre horse-riding and circular hiking trail passes through Hohenstein’s landscapes and by cultural monuments such as the Limes and the castle. The options range from short loops with designated stations to a longer route through the countryside.

Cycling and seasonal experiences

On the Aar Valley Cycle Route, a short, steep climb of up to nine per cent leads to Hohenstein-Born; after that, the route continues on flatter terrain through Hohenstein-Breithardt. Another opportunity to get active outdoors is the annual event day on the last Sunday in May: the Aarstraße (B 54) is closed to motorised traffic for one day and reserved exclusively for cycling, scooters and inline skating. The route also passes through Hohenstein. Since the event takes place on a particular Sunday in May, it’s easy to include the cycle route event as a seasonal highlight when planning your trip.

Hohenstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district

Within the wider destination of the Rheingau-Taunus district, Hohenstein’s castle and Limes history is complemented by a distinctive landscape. The district’s boundaries include Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch, which form part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Steep river slopes, steep vineyards and terraced viticulture, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine shape its cultural landscape. The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes also crosses the Rheingau-Taunus district for approximately 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. The 14 Riesling Loops offer another perspective: these circular routes, between four and eight kilometres long, run between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein and explore Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau.

When looking for a place to stay, you can choose Hohenstein as your destination based on what you want your trip to focus on: the castle and seasonal theatre, the signposted Limes circular trails, the yoga stations, or longer trails and cycling routes.
