Walluf offers several ways to shape a stay: vineyards and walks in nature, named circular hiking routes, and the history of St. John's Church. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors or are interested in culture, the local themes can give your trip planning a clear direction.

Vineyards and walks

The planted vineyard area within the boundaries of Walluf covers approximately 70 hectares and is divided among six vineyard sites. You can take in this vineyard landscape while exploring the town: the vineyards invite you to enjoy leisurely walks in nature. Viticulture and exercise can therefore provide the setting for a stay in Walluf, without the need for a fixed itinerary.

Wine tastings are another local experience: Walluf's winemakers invite visitors to taste wines directly at the producer. If you plan a tasting, check with your chosen winery for its current offerings and opening times. This will help you plan this part of your stay more precisely.

Circular hikes starting in Niederwalluf

The Bubenhäuser Höhe circular hike runs from Niederwalluf via Bubenhäuser Höhe and Eltville-Martinsthal, returning to Niederwalluf. A second route, the Grauer Stein circular hike, also starts and ends in Niederwalluf. It passes Hof Armada, Monstranzenbaum, Grauer Stein, Rauenthal, Martinsthal and Oberwalluf. The named stops make it easy to distinguish between the two routes when planning.

The MĂĽhlen hiking trail along the Walluftal begins at the mouth of the Wallufbach where it flows into the Rhine. This makes its starting point on the river easy to identify. If you choose one of the routes for your stay, it's worth checking current trail conditions before setting out.

A historical perspective on Walluf

St. John's Church in Walluf dates from the late 15th century. Traces of an earlier building from the 10th or 11th century can be found in its north wall. The building thus brings together evidence from two widely separated periods: the late-medieval church and the older traces in the north wall. This cultural and historical theme offers a different focus for planning than the vineyards and hiking trails.

More to explore in the wider Rheingau-Taunus district

In the wider destination of the Rheingau-Taunus district, the district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley through the municipal areas of RĂĽdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. The World Heritage cultural landscape is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terrace viticulture, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine. This regional perspective complements Walluf's own themes with a broader view of the landscape and viticulture.

Another historical theme in the Rheingau-Taunus district is the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. It crosses the district for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. It runs for around 33 kilometres through the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park. Zugmantel Fort is also located in this nature park and was part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes.

If you'd prefer to explore the cultural landscape via hiking trails, the wider Rheingau-Taunus district has 14 Riesling circular trails. These routes run between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein, are each 4 to 8 kilometres long, and focus on Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. Their different lengths offer a practical point of comparison when choosing a route.

Other regional cultural themes offer their own perspectives: in the courtyard of Schloss Johannisberg, a monument to the Spätlesereiter commemorates the discovery of late harvest wine in 1775. The tower of Eltville Electoral Castle houses a Gutenberg memorial with an exhibition on the art of printing, as well as a historical collection on the city's history.

Choose Walluf as your base

For travel by train, the long-distance rail connections may be a useful factor when choosing where to stay. The right-bank Rhine line runs from Koblenz via RĂĽdesheim am Rhein and Wiesbaden to Frankfurt am Main. As a result, Lorch, Geisenheim, Oestrich-Winkel, Eltville and Walluf are directly connected to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance rail network. For specific travel dates, check current connections with RMV.

When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which of Walluf's themes you want to focus on: the vineyards and walks, one of the circular hikes, or the history of St. John's Church. If you'd also like to include destinations in the Rheingau-Taunus district, its regional landscape, hiking and cultural themes can help round out your plans.
