Bermuthshain: Old School, Muna History and Trails
Accommodation in Bermuthshain
The listed “Old School” defines Bermuthshain’s townscape and is its landmark. The wooden ski jump offers a different view beyond the village: built in 1970, it now serves as a viewpoint overlooking the municipality of Grebenhain. At “Höllerich”, below the listed ski jump, outdoor wedding ceremonies are possible. Availability depends on the municipality’s booking arrangements.
Old School and Muna Museum
The Muna Museum Grebenhain opened in the historic “Old School” in May 2011. It is dedicated to the Hartmannshain Air Ammunition Depot in the Oberwald near Grebenhain, which operated from 1936 to 1945. It is the first museum in Germany to address the history of up to 370 ammunition depots operated by the German Wehrmacht during the Nazi era.
Exhibits, historical photographs, models and films tell the story of the Muna. The exhibition also remembers the Ukrainian forced labourers who were made to work at the air ammunition depot between 1943 and 1945. The site’s history after the Second World War includes industrial development, the NATO supply depot during the Cold War and the removal of ammunition.
Guided museum tours for private groups can be arranged by appointment for a date of your choice. Signs point to the Muna Museum at the turn-off to Bermuthshain on the B 275 and from the village’s main road.
Hiking trails in the Grebenhain destination
You can also broaden your hiking plans to include the wider Grebenhain destination. Hiking trails with a combined length of over 100 km extend around the 15 volcanic villages of the 92 km² municipality. The Vulkanring and the Bonifatius Route pass through all 15 villages in the municipality. The Kleekopf Trail loops around Grebenhain, passing the Katzenteich pond and the Oberwald barbecue area.
The WeiĂźer Stein Trail offers a different connection to the area: it loops around Bermuthshain and passes a viewpoint and a former ski jump below the WeiĂźer Stein. The historic Tanzplatz in Grebenhain is another place to discover along the hiking trails. The routes therefore differ in their points of reference: the two longer-distance trails pass through the villages, while the Kleekopf Trail loops around Grebenhain and the WeiĂźer Stein Trail around Bermuthshain. Check the Kleekopf Trail markings locally; route conditions can change.
In the wider Grebenhain destination, the Förderverein MUNA-Museum Grebenhain e. V. offers guided hikes and tours of the former Hartmannshain Air Ammunition Depot grounds throughout the year. They are intended for interested groups, such as clubs and school classes, and take place by prior arrangement. Groups can therefore choose between tours of the exhibition and tours of the former site.
Winter trails and cycling routes
The cross-country ski trail starts in Bermuthshain at the car park opposite the Grebenhain-Bermuthshain sports ground. An alternative starting point is the Oberwald car park on the B 275 between Herchenhain and Grebenhain. There are also starting points for an extensive cross-country ski trail network in the wider Grebenhain destination. In winter, the Herchenhainer Höhenweg has a ski slope with a lift and groomed trails; trail conditions and availability vary by season.
Cycling routes also take different paths through the Grebenhain destination: the Vulkanradweg runs right through the municipality, while the SĂĽdbahnradweg ends in Hartmannshain, a district of Grebenhain. Along the Vulkanradweg between Schlitz and Grebenhain/Hartmannshain, 16 listening points feature stories and little-known secrets about the Vogelsberg volcanic region. The listening points are part of a GPS-guided audio tour; check in advance that the app is available.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests
When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you would most like to do. Bermuthshain offers points of interest around the “Old School”, the Muna Museum, the viewpoint and the cross-country ski trail. If you would also like to include hiking and cycling routes in other places, you can include Grebenhain as a wider destination in your plans.
