Herchenhain lies on the southern side of Herchenhainer Höhe and is considered a local recreation area and excursion destination with unique panoramic views. At 733 m, Herchenhainer Höhe is the fourth-highest peak in the Vogelsberg. The highland landscape, village history and Family Trail through the mountain hay meadows offer different reasons to include the village in your travel plans.

Village Character and Market History

The Protestant church stands on a hill at the village’s southwestern, lower-lying edge. The historic village center lies around the church and the Old School. Herchenhain has held market rights since 1359 and hosts the well-known Johannismarkt every year. The church, Old School and market history each add their own character to a visit. If you plan to attend the Johannismarkt, check the dates in advance so you can schedule your stay around the annual event.

Explore the Family Trail through the Mountain Hay Meadows

The “Family Trail through the Mountain Hay Meadows” leads through the colorful world of the mountain hay meadows. Six information boards provide information about the land managers and animal and plant species. The trail combines the landscape with information about the land managers and the species featured at the stations.

Along the trail, the “Family Trail” audio guide uses a smartphone and QR codes at six information boards to bring stories about animals, land managers and plants to life. It starts at the trail entrance at Herchenhainer Höhe, at the entrance to the mountain hay meadow trail. Families and school groups should allow about two hours for the circular route. This approximate duration helps you fit the route into your day as a separate activity while choosing a pace that suits your group.

Another Activity at the Heights

The alpine ski run at Herchenhainer Höhe is 600 m long. The village offers both a circular trail with nature information and a ski run as distinct activities. If you plan to use the ski run, check current operating conditions in advance.

More Trails in the Wider Grebenhain Destination

The wider Grebenhain destination offers more hiking trails with their own route options. The Vulkanring and the Bonifatius Route pass through the municipality’s 15 villages. The Kleekopf Trail runs around Grebenhain and passes Katzenteich and the Oberwald barbecue area. The Weißer Stein Trail runs around Bermuthshain and passes a viewpoint and a former ski jump below Weißer Stein. Trail conditions can change; on the Kleekopf Trail, also check the local trail markers.

Cycling routes also offer another way to explore the wider Grebenhain destination: the Vulkanradweg runs through the middle of the municipality, while the Südbahnradweg ends in the district of Hartmannshain. The Vulkanradweg between Schlitz and Grebenhain/Hartmannshain has 16 audio points featuring stories and little-known facts about the Vogelsberg volcanic region. The GPS-based audio tour depends on app availability; check this before your ride. For groups such as clubs and school classes, the Förderverein MUNA-Museum Grebenhain e. V. offers guided walks and tours of the former Hartmannshain air ammunition depot site throughout the year, by prior arrangement.
