Schotten: Volcanism, Half-Timbered Houses and the Nidda Reservoir
Accommodation in Schotten
Schotten brings together volcanism, half-timbered history and time by the water. At the Nidda Reservoir, there are opportunities for activity and relaxation; museums, a church and historic buildings offer insights into the town’s history. There are also trails and activities around the Hoherodskopf to suit a wide range of schedules.
At the Nidda Reservoir: Water and Trails
At the southern edge of Schotten, the Nidda River is dammed to form the 65-hectare Nidda Reservoir, a local recreation area. The paved circular path around the lake is 5 km long and is suitable for inline skating, cycling, skating and leisurely walks. The route therefore offers a set distance and several ways to enjoy the outdoors.
The Nidda Reservoir offers boat rentals, a surfing and sailing school, a large children’s playground and sunbathing lawns. Some facilities may vary seasonally. If you are planning to use any of them during your stay, check availability in advance.
Volcanism and Excursions in the Area
The Vulkaneum in Schotten explores volcanism in an interactive exhibition. It explains how volcanoes shaped the Vogelsberg and continue to influence it today. Hands-on stations, interactive exhibits and multimedia installations accompany visitors through the exhibition. This combines an engaging presentation with a subject that has also shaped the Vogelsberg landscape.
The Vulkaneum can be reached by public transport from the train stations in Nidda, Lich, Lauterbach and Gießen. A bus goes to the “Vulkaneum” stop, which is about 50 m from the entrance. Check the timetable when planning your specific journey.
The Hoherodskopf is close to Schotten. The treetop walkway is 500 metres long in total and features suspension bridges attached directly to the trees. The tree platforms offer views across the hilly landscape of the Vogelsberg. At the Hoherodskopf high ropes course, visitors can climb from tree to tree under the guidance of trained staff.
The trails also vary considerably in length and the time they take. The GipfelTour Schotten covers 14 kilometres, passing four peaks in the Oberwald as well as species-rich mountain meadows and woodland with rugged basalt formations. Two GPS activities start and finish at the Hoherodskopf Information Centre: the 5 km GeoCaching course is suitable from Year 3 of primary school and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The 8 km GeoRallye includes questions and tasks about the environment, nature and technology, takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, and can also be completed by mountain bike. The fee is €10.00 per GPS device for GeoCaching and €12.00 for the GeoRallye; each device is intended for a maximum of four people.
Half-Timbered Houses, Church and Local History
The local history museum in Schotten is housed in the former residence of Dr. Karl Weber, a Hessian state councillor. The impressive half-timbered building dates from 1816; its interior was remodelled in the Art Nouveau style in 1908. The building thus combines its former use as a residence with a later transformation of its interior.
The Church of Our Lady is a Gothic church built between 1350 and 1385. Its winged altar was painted around 1385 by the “Master of Schotten”. It depicts scenes from the life of Mary, includes Hebrew characters and Jewish symbols, among other things, and is considered one of the earliest records of Jewish life in the Vogelsberg. The Alteburgpark is also near the historic old town. At the heart of the grounds is a half-timbered building dating from the 16th century, surrounded by a moat fed by the Nidda.
Schotten and the Vogelsberg
In the Vogelsberg, the view extends beyond Schotten: the Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. The Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse.
