Mücke lies on the western slopes of the Vogelsberg, in a landscape of gently rolling green hills. Local history, exhibitions and cycling routes offer different ways to shape your stay. If you would like to combine several interests, you can plan your trip around historical insights, cycling or other destinations in the wider Vogelsberg travel region.

Local History and Exhibitions in Mücke

The Schlosskeller in Merlau offers insights into more than 400 years of local history and contains a 1:100 scale model of the former Merlau Castle. Merlau Castle was built between 1583 and 1592 as a complex of several buildings. The model shows the site at a reduced scale, while the construction dates place its history in context.

The Hobstallstowwe village museum in Merlau also brings together different glimpses of everyday life in the past: it displays historic agricultural and household equipment as well as changing exhibitions. In Groß-Eichen, the Ernst Eimer Stube is a public exhibition space featuring works by the painter and poet Ernst Eimer. The Koallese House was built in 1545 and is considered one of the oldest dated half-timbered houses in Upper Hesse. Wall paintings in the Protestant church in Ober-Ohmen depict Saint Elizabeth.

Cycling Routes and a Route Through Mücke’s Districts

Several well-marked cycling routes can be used to explore or travel through Mücke. The easy Seenbach Tour covers about 13 kilometres from Mücke to Laubach. This gives you a specific destination to consider when choosing a route; the ERZWEG Mitte, by contrast, runs exclusively through Mücke’s districts. Parking is available at its two access points, Mücke railway station and the “Mittelpunkt” near Flensunger Hof.

For an introduction to mining, the Kunstturm Mücke offers a special perspective. Its annex houses a permanent exhibition on iron ore mining in the Vogelsberg. The Kunstturm is also a starting point or stop on a cycling and hiking route about the Vogelsberg’s mining history. The exhibition and route therefore explore the same subject in different formats: one as a permanent display, the other along a cycling and hiking trail.

Landscape and Other Destinations in the Vogelsberg

The landscape also offers a specific natural attraction: two streams meet in the Luse nature reserve. In the wider Vogelsberg travel region, the Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic area. The Vogelsberger Bergmähwiesen are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse.

The Vulkaneum in Schotten is an interactive museum that brings volcanism to life. Its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg; visitors can experience the past first-hand at various experiment stations and interactive exhibits. For a different view of the landscape, the treetop walkway is 500 metres long and features suspension bridges. At the Hoherodskopf high ropes course, nature and adventure enthusiasts can climb from tree to tree under the supervision of trained staff.

The hiking routes also vary in length and character. The GipfelTour Schotten covers 14 kilometres, crossing four peaks in the Oberwald and passing through species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with ancient basalt formations. The Weitblicktour Ulrichstein is shorter at 11.6 kilometres and is described as a moderate circular route; it goes around Ulrichstein through deciduous forests and varied small-scale agricultural landscapes. For the rest of your trip in the Vogelsberg, you can therefore choose between a longer route over several peaks and a shorter, moderate loop.
