Bad Arolsen is known as a baroque town on the shore of Twistesee, where culture and nature meet. Arolsen Residential Palace is the town’s landmark and was built in the Baroque style between 1710 and 1810. The palace’s history, museums and avenues give your trip a distinct cultural and historical focus, while the lake and trails offer further options for planning your visit.

Baroque History and Rauch

Guided town tours focus on baroque splendour, historic sites and anecdotes. If you prefer to solve challenges on your own, you can explore Bad Arolsen’s baroque centre with a city game. The two activities offer different experiences: stories accompany the tour, while challenges encourage you to take a closer look. Check the town tour dates and the game’s availability before your trip.

An Augustinian monastery once stood on the grounds of the residential palace and was first mentioned in 1131. This means the site’s history goes back further than the construction period of today’s palace. A look at Bad Arolsen’s baroque architecture can therefore be complemented by an earlier historical layer.

The C. D. Rauch Birthplace is in the former chamberlain’s house, where Christian Daniel Rauch was born on 2 January 1777. Drawings explain how sculptures were created and draw attention to the journey from design to finished work. The Christian Daniel Rauch Museum displays original works by Rauch and 19th-century sculptures; it also explores the development of neoclassical sculpture. The museum is housed in the baroque stables of Arolsen Residential Palace, built between 1749 and 1758.

The Arolsen Archives collection offers another cultural and historical perspective: it has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register since 2013 and contains information on around 17.5 million people.

Avenues, Trails and Activities at Twistesee

The baroque avenues are ideal for walking and cycling. The GroĂźe Allee gives a sense of their scale: it is 1.6 kilometres long and lined with around 880 oak trees planted in six rows. Its length, number of trees and arrangement give this avenue a distinctive character; those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find a different focus here than at the palace and museums.

A route titled “Twiste Reservoir–Twistesee Beach” starts in Bad Arolsen. A nine-hole golf course and the MacBirdies adventure golf course are also located above Twistesee. If you would like to include either facility in your plans, check the facilities and access before your trip.

Waldeck-Frankenberg: Nature and Longer Hiking Plans

The wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg offers further ways to experience nature and hiking. The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2011. The 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee can be hiked in eight stages; alternatively, there is a three-day ranger-guided hike, with around 22 kilometres per stage. The two formats offer different ways to plan your hike: divide it into eight stages or take a three-day trip with a ranger.

When choosing accommodation, you can start with the focus of your trip. If you want the residential palace, town tours and baroque avenues to shape your visit, focus your search on Bad Arolsen. If the Urwaldsteig or the multi-day ranger-guided hike is your main focus, include Waldeck-Frankenberg as a wider destination when choosing where to stay.
