Hillershausen combines a landscape shaped by meadows and forests with hiking trails and cultural attractions. Well-marked routes around the village invite you to hike, go riding and relax; the low mountain range climate is also part of the experience of nature. A stay here can therefore alternate between outdoor activity and more leisurely discoveries, depending on which aspects of the village you want to focus on.

Hiking among viewpoints, the Aar and long-distance trails

After about 300 metres on hiking trail NS3, you can enjoy an impressive view across the Waldecker Land and the Land of a Thousand Mountains. A hiking trail from Hillershausen reaches Nieder-Schleidern and the Sauerland Höhenflug after about one kilometre. This 250-kilometre long-distance trail runs from Korbach in the east to Meinerzhagen in the west.

Another route is the Aarmühle Circular Trail 2, “By the Rushing Waters of the Aar”. It passes Aarmühle and follows the Aar to the Aarschröder farmstead. A small path leads uphill to a forest trail on Kleiner Korskopf; the route ends at the edge of the forest with a panoramic view. This offers different hiking options: a viewpoint on NS3, a link towards Nieder-Schleidern and the Sauerland Höhenflug, or a trail along the Aar to the edge of the forest.

Experience nature and discover culture

Hillershausen offers a nature tour for all ages, families, groups and nature lovers. The meeting point is the car park at the Hillershausen multi-purpose hall. Unlike a hike you choose to take on your own, a guided tour introduces you to nature, and the meeting point is clearly specified.

Local discoveries also include church history. A diocesan article dated 16 June 2022 describes the Catholic Church of St Michael as a replacement building constructed on the outskirts of Hillershausen between 1935 and 1937. The same article introduces the “In God’s Footsteps” star trail, which leads to three other wayside crosses in Hillershausen. Hiking trails, a nature tour and the star trail offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

More to discover in the wider Korbach destination

The Wolfgang Bonhage Museum Korbach covers the world-famous fossils of the Korbach Fissure, the 1,000-year history of the medieval Hanseatic town of Korbach, and evidence of historic gold mining at Eisenberg. The Korbach Fissure is a fossil site for Upper Permian vertebrates. Alongside the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is considered the most significant palaeontological geological monument in Hesse and the oldest known fossil-bearing fissure in Europe.

Routes in Korbach also connect nature and culture. The GeoPfad Korbach is a circular trail of about 20 kilometres between the Korbach Fissure and Eisenberg near Goldhausen. Eisenberg is home to Germany’s largest gold deposit, a visitor mine and the “Goldspur” educational trail. Gold coins set into the ground guide visitors to points of interest in the medieval Hanseatic town of Korbach. The 2.1-kilometre “Between the Walls” circular trail runs between the two medieval town walls around the historic old town. At ten stops, you can learn fascinating facts and curious details about the town’s history and discover modern aspects of Korbach.

For families also considering cycling routes, the Green Trails Korbach at Eisenberg near Korbach-Goldhausen include ten kilometres of singletrack. The trails were completed in summer 2023 and linked into four circuits of varying difficulty, offering fun for the whole family.

Hillershausen offers local points of interest, while Korbach, as the wider destination, adds museums, urban history and mining to explore.
