Nature trails and a family adventure trail in Lengefeld
A 3.5-kilometre family adventure trail gives Lengefeld a special focus on active exploration. The route starts at the Forsthaus Lengefeld hiking car park and runs alongside the Marbeck stream and Wipperteich pond, as well as through the beech forest on Wipper Berg. The trail thus combines different landscape features with hands-on discovery stops.
The trail is designed for interactive learning and outdoor play. The activities explore topics such as water, forests, soils and rocks, as well as the wildlife of streams and forests. Along the route, there is a discovery point, seven adventure stations, three play areas and a rest area. Learning, exercise and play are thus brought together in the trail design.
The trail is manageable for families with kindergarten-age children, but is not suitable for pushchairs. The medieval HĂĽnenkeller lies right next to the family adventure trail and can be reached via a short detour. This allows the route to combine its nature and play stations with a historic destination. The trail was established in spring 2024; its facilities may change through maintenance or other alterations.
Lengefeld is located in Diemelsee Nature Park. Local options also include marked cycling and hiking trails. In winter, cross-country ski tracks are prepared; this seasonal provision depends on the weather and maintenance. The activities offer different focuses: the family trail combines learning and play, while cycling and hiking routes focus on exercise. Cross-country skiing is a separate winter option.
Consider whether to include the family trail, marked hiking and cycling routes or—depending on winter conditions—cross-country skiing in your plans. This will help you find a location that suits your itinerary.
Korbach: geological history and mining
The wider destination of Korbach complements its nature and trails with a broad range of themes. The Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH covers the world-famous fossils of the Korbach Fissure, the 1,000-year history of the medieval Hanseatic town of Korbach, and evidence of historic gold mining on Eisenberg. Fossils, urban history and mining thus offer different points of interest for planning your trip.
The Korbach Fissure is a fossil site containing Upper Permian vertebrates. Alongside the Messel Pit UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, it is considered the most significant palaeontological site in Hesse and the oldest known fossil-bearing fissure in Europe. At the GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach, you can explore the landscape and wildlife of 250 million years ago. The rocks found around Korbach illustrate how this ancient landscape formed.
The Korbach GeoPath is an approximately 20-kilometre circular route connecting the Korbach Fissure with Eisenberg near Goldhausen. Eisenberg is home to Germany’s largest gold deposit, a visitor mine and the “Goldspur” educational trail. Evidence of mining can be seen above ground along this trail; further evidence lies underground in the visitor mine. At the Eisenberg Gold Visitor Mine, you can experience historic mining.
The Green Trails Korbach are also located on Eisenberg near Korbach-Goldhausen. They comprise 10 kilometres of singletrack trails and were completed in summer 2023. The routes are linked into four loops of varying difficulty and offer fun for the whole family. The central trailhead is on the outskirts of Korbach, right by SĂĽdring. There are parking spaces, rest areas and a bicycle repair station. From the car park, a connecting route leads directly to Eisenberg and the four singletrack trails in the Korbach trail area.
Korbach’s Old Town and Goldspur
The 2.1-kilometre circular route “Zwischen den Mauern” (“Between the Walls”) runs between the two medieval town walls around Korbach’s historic Old Town. At ten stops, you can discover fascinating facts and curiosities from the town’s history and learn about modern-day Korbach. The route begins and ends at the town model by the Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH.
The Korbach Goldspur leads to the sights of the medieval Hanseatic town via gold coins set into the ground. Together with the circular route between the town walls, it places a clear focus on Korbach’s history; the routes explore this theme in different ways.
