Discover Roda through its historic architecture and trails into the Burgwald countryside. The village streetscape, local attractions and hiking options offer different ways to shape your stay: explore half-timbered houses and local history, or focus on trails and landscapes.

Half-timbered houses, farmsteads and the village centre

Historic farmsteads with single-house farmsteads or Hakenhöfe (farmsteads with an L-shaped layout) shape the streetscape in Roda on both sides of the main road, between the junctions with Kirchweg and north of Kirchweg. Well-preserved half-timbered buildings are also part of the village’s character; some were built in the 18th century. If you are interested in a place’s architectural heritage, you will find tangible examples here that reveal Roda’s character.

Among the special attractions are the herb garden beside the church and the village centre with its fountain. Each adds its own distinctive feature to the village streetscape: the garden is next to the church, while the fountain marks the centre of the village.

A recurring cultural event is the youth fire brigade’s cup competition. It takes place every year on Whit Monday and is described as Germany’s largest and oldest cup competition of its kind. If you would like to include the competition in your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.

Hiking trails and landscapes

Romantic hiking trails lead from Roda into the Burgwald area. Meadow valleys, flowing waters and ponds shape its landscape. Alongside the village’s historic sights, you can choose from nature trails and a variety of landscapes.

The X 25 “Oberhessen Circular Trail” runs in sections from Herrenbänke via Roda to Münchhausen and on to Bracht. The stated distances for these sections are 3, 15 and 7 kilometres. These figures help you compare the sections by length; check the specific route before setting out.

Seegerteichhütte offers places to rest and serves as a starting point for section hikes. The long-distance hiking trails X 9 “Wartburg Trail” and X 13 “Student Trail” pass by the hut. In addition to the X 25, these provide further named routes to consider when planning your hike.

More hiking destinations in Rosenthal

Rosenthal also has its own distinct hiking destinations. The Wildrosenweg there is a 2.6-kilometre circular trail, mostly paved, suitable in every season for a walk for all ages. About 60 different varieties of roses can be seen along the trail, including around 40 wild rose varieties and their hybrids. This short loop and its variety of roses offer a different focus from the longer Franzosenwiesentour.

The Franzosenwiesentour is a 19.2-kilometre premium hiking trail; its certification is valid until May 2028. It passes through woodland meadows and marshland, as well as alongside streams. The “Franzosenwiesen” are a nature reserve with numerous endangered plant and animal species. Their name recalls the Huguenots, French religious refugees, and their work in the marsh meadows.

The Franzosenwiesentour starts at Seegerteichhütte near Rosenthal. There is a car park at the hut; the Rodaer Straße bus stop in Rosenthal is listed as 500 metres away. The hut also offers places to rest and serves as a starting point for section hikes; X 9 “Wartburg Trail” and X 13 “Student Trail” pass by it.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which experiences you want to focus on: Roda’s historic farmsteads and the trails from Roda into the Burgwald area, or one of the distinct hiking destinations in Rosenthal. This gives your accommodation search a clear direction without conflating the different village and route profiles.
