Rosenthal can be explored in very different ways: one focuses on roses, while others take in woodland meadows, moors or historic boundary stones. There is also a Protestant church near the market square and a small school museum. When choosing accommodation in Rosenthal, you can first consider whether longer hikes, shorter walks or culture should shape your stay.

Hiking trails between woodland meadows and roses

The Franzosenwiesentour is a 19.2-kilometre premium hiking trail in the uplands near Rosenthal. It passes through woodland meadows and moorland, as well as along streams. The Franzosenwiesen are a nature reserve with numerous endangered plant and animal species. The hiking quality seal is valid until May 2028.

The starting point is at the SeegerteichhĂĽtte near Rosenthal. The Rodaer StraĂźe bus stop in Rosenthal is 500 metres away; there is a car park at the hut. The distance to the bus stop and the car park at the hut offer practical guidance when planning your journey and the start of your hike.

Considerably shorter is the 2.6-kilometre Wildrosenweg: a mostly paved circular trail suitable for a walk in any season, for young and old alike. About 60 varieties of rose can be seen along the trail, including around 40 wild rose varieties and their hybrids. At the Wildrosenweg, the “Rosenmärchen” nature experience site offers various play and rest facilities. Rosenthal therefore offers a choice between a longer hike and a compact circular trail featuring roses.

Discover boundary stones and landscapes

The boundary stone hiking trails also differ in length and route. The South-East Boundary Stone Trail begins at the “Dreiländerstein” in the southeastern tip of Rosenthal town forest and follows the municipal and district boundary to the Krimmelbachgrund in the “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve. Over six kilometres, it leads to further historic boundary stones and explores their historical background.

The historic boundary stone hiking trail in the northeast and south of Rosenthal is 14 kilometres long. Of this, 7.5 kilometres make up the historic section, which follows a prehistoric ridgeway and the Rhine–Weser watershed. It is also possible to hike continuously along boundary stones for just over 17 kilometres, from the “Böddeberg” above Willersdorf to the “Alten Wetterweg” heights in the Rosenthal municipal area. These details offer a practical guide to choosing between several hikes with a historical focus.

The “Merzhäuser Teiche” nature reserve is nearby and covers around 20 hectares. To date, 128 bird species have been observed there, including 57 breeding species. There are further hiking trails around Rosenthal; the Burgwald has a total of 103 kilometres of well-signposted hiking trails.

Church and school history

The Protestant Church in Rosenthal stands near the market square. For historical, artistic and urban-planning reasons, it is listed as a cultural monument in the State of Hesse’s monument register. The small school museum is located in the left-hand classroom of the Old School in Rosenthal. Since 2010, it has brought the history of the former school back to life. Please contact the museum in advance if you would like to visit.

Whether you want to focus on roses along the trails, the landscape of the Franzosenwiesen, historic boundary stones or local school history, Rosenthal offers different starting points for planning your trip. The stated trail lengths help you assess your hiking plans, while the church and museum complement the natural attractions and routes with a cultural perspective on the town.
