Grebendorf: Half-Timbered Houses and Meinhard Lake
Accommodation in Grebendorf
Grebendorf combines visible village history with experiences on the water and along the trails. Restored half-timbered houses, a castle and the church shape the historic village center; the Meinhard Lake area lies between Grebendorf and Jestädt. This gives you a range of starting points for planning your trip: architectural history in the village, hikes through the valley, and activities around the lake and on the bike.
Half-Timbered Houses and Architectural History
At Kirchstraße 2 stands a residential building dating from 1593. It is one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in the Werra-Meißner district. The historic village center is distinguished by its many restored half-timbered houses. Other features include the Old Keudell Castle, dating from the 17th century, a round village green and the church. Its architectural history thus extends beyond individual buildings to the design of the village center.
The present-day church was built to plans by the ecclesiastical architect Johann Friedrich Matthei and consecrated in 1821. Remains of a former 15th-century tower are preserved on its west side; the tower was raised to its current height in 1843. The building thus brings together several historical periods.
Meinhard Lake: Water and Activity
The Meinhard Lake area lies between Grebendorf and Jestädt and covers about 500,000 square meters. The lake offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, camping and water sports; there is a restaurant at the lakeside terrace. Walks and cycling tours are possible around the lakes. Alongside the village scenery, the surrounding landscape offers a place to combine a stay by the water with outdoor activity.
Meinhard Lake in Meinhard-Grebendorf also has a waterslide and a pedal boat rental. Check before your visit whether these facilities are operating seasonally. This lets you plan according to the specific dates of your stay.
Explore on Foot or by Bike
Grebendorf and the Werra Valley offer opportunities for hikes through the valley and floodplains. Grebendorf also borders directly on the forests and hills of the Meinhard, giving you direct access to nature. If you prefer to spend your time cycling, you can follow the 33-kilometer Castles Cycling Loop: it is considered family-friendly, runs along both banks of the Werra with almost no climbs, and connects castles and smaller manor houses, including those in Grebendorf.
Another cycling option is the Werra Valley Cycle Path, which runs directly alongside the Meinhard Lake area in Meinhard-Grebendorf. The cycling loop and the cycle path are two distinct ways to explore the surrounding area by bike. In the destination of Meinhard, Seepark is located on the eastern shore of Lake Werratal. It offers leisure and swimming facilities for the whole family, as well as a versatile playground and beach volleyball courts.
