Berneburg invites you to explore its many layers of history: St. John’s Church combines an 18th-century building with tombstones from an older pilgrimage church, the Kirchberg preserves memories of Berneburg families, and the Steinischer Hof dates back to the late 14th century. The local Ascension Day shooting event adds a different note: a shooting tradition followed by a get-together. This gives you a choice of architectural history, local heritage and customs as you plan your trip.

St. John’s Church and the Kirchberg: history across several eras

The Italian master builder Giovanni Ghezzi built Berneburg’s St. John’s Church between 1743 and 1747. Tombstones from an older church are set into its floor. That church stood on the Kirchberg as a pilgrimage church. The church therefore brings together the 18th-century building period and evidence of an older religious site.

The Kirchberg also preserves numerous valuable tombstones associated with Berneburg families from earlier centuries. Together, the church and tombstones tell of different ways of remembering: one points to the history of a pilgrimage site, while the others recall families that were connected to Berneburg across generations. Those interested in local history will find more than a single period of construction to explore here.

A fortified residential tower and local customs

The Steinischer Hof, with its Kemenate, is a cultural monument of particular character. Its historic features include a very old fortified residential tower, dated to around 1385. Alongside St. John’s Church, it offers another way to explore Berneburg’s architectural history: here, the focus is on a residential building with defensive features rather than a church.

Local shooting traditions are also part of the town’s character. Their main event is the Ascension Day shooting, followed by a communal barbecue. This brings together different themes for planning a trip: historic architecture and tombstones on one hand, and a local custom with a get-together on the other.

Active experiences in the wider Sontra destination

The wider Sontra destination offers more options for active days. The Kids Course at the Sontra pump track features asphalt waves and bends about 20 centimetres high. It is designed as a fun introduction to wheeled sports for toddlers and balance-bike riders. The MTB skills course in Sontra offers something different: it is 380 metres long, covers about 1,000 square metres and has an elevation difference of around 1.5 metres. Its features include two wooden bridges, a rock garden, a sand section with varying levels of difficulty and a log ride—a descent over a tree trunk.

The routes also vary in length and theme. The premium trail P26 “Holstein” is an 8-kilometre circular route through the Holstein local recreation area. The 3.7-kilometre Bundeswehr educational trail crosses the former grounds of the Hussar Barracks and offers insight into the region’s military history. Route details may change, so it is worth checking the latest information on P26 before setting out.

For cycling, the 36-kilometre Glück-Auf cycle route connects the towns of Cornberg, Nentershausen, Solz and Sontra, all shaped by copper shale mining. The long-distance “Way of German Unity” and the Barbarossa Trail (X8) also pass through Sontra. Notable attractions there include the historic old town and the impressive half-timbered town hall. Copper was mined at Sontra’s Brodberg more than 500 years ago; cobalt and barite were also mined there later.
