Discover Waldkappel: Winter, Trails and Town History
Accommodation in Waldkappel
Waldkappel offers a range of experiences: winter activities on Gelltalberg, trails leading up into the heights of the Waldkappel Mountains, and a distinctive historic townscape. The Gelltalarena ski and toboggan area, the late Gothic church, and activities for cycling and hiking enthusiasts offer different starting points for planning a trip.
Winter, Cycling Routes and Trails into the Heights
The Gelltalarena is located on the northern slope of Gelltalberg in Waldkappel. Skiing and tobogganing have long been part of its winter activities. Alongside cycling and hiking, those interested in active days will also find an explicitly winter-themed option here.
The Herkules-Wartburg Cycle Route follows the Wehre through Waldkappel and Wehretal, across the Ringgau and, at Ifta, onward to Thuringia. Its route places Waldkappel on a trail that continues beyond the town. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether cycling or another activity should be the main focus.
The P17 Waldkappeler Berge Premium Trail leads from Waldkappel up to the heights of the Waldkappel Mountains. For views of the landscape, the Pionierturm on Mäuseberg at 415 m and the Ziegenküppel observation tower at 445 m offer viewpoints; both towers are freely accessible.
Church, Collection and Local History
At the heart of the town, the late Gothic church, with its soaring tower, shapes Waldkappel’s skyline from afar. It also stands as a testament to the town’s former prosperity. The combination of architecture, setting and historical symbolism makes the church a distinctive feature of the townscape.
A local history collection offers another perspective on the past: the Waldkappel Local History Museum displays everyday objects from earlier times. In Bischhausen, a district of Waldkappel, a heritage trail also explores the history of the village. The town therefore offers different ways to engage with local history, from a landmark visible from afar to a collection and a trail through Bischhausen’s history.
The Werra-Meißner District as a Wider Destination
As part of the wider Werra-Meißner District destination, the district is a tourist destination within the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land. Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Forest, geological diversity, varied landscapes, and a rich flora and fauna come together. More than 35 percent of the Werra-Meißner District is designated as protected areas for nature. A large part of the Geo-Nature Park also belongs to Hotspot 17, one of only 30 areas nationwide with outstanding biological diversity. Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is considered the home of Frau Holle.
The seasons also shape the visitor landscapes in the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land. They include the cherry blossom in the Witzenhausen cherry-growing area, the orchid bloom, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, and Frau Holle’s flower meadows. Later in the year, the changing foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner are among the seasonal attractions. The precise timing of seasonal events varies from year to year.
A family-friendly option in the Werra-Meißner District is the Cherry Adventure Trail in and around Witzenhausen. At 17 stations, visitors can learn about cherries and their wide range of varieties, try things out and experience the cultural landscape around Witzenhausen. The wider region therefore also offers a distinct way to explore nature and culture, different from the trails and historical themes in Waldkappel.
