Reichelsheim (Wetterau) combines visible town history with trails that reveal different sides of the town. Remains of the city wall, the western town gate, and four of the seven original defensive towers bring the town’s fortification history to life. There are also hiking and walking routes around Heuchelheim, by the Bergwerksee lake, and in Blofeld. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between historic buildings and spending time outdoors on foot. If you are traveling together, each outing can have a different focus.

Between Heuchelheim, the City Wall, and Bergwerksee Lake

The Heuchelheim Loop runs around Heuchelheim and is about 2.3 kilometers long. Its approximate length makes it a clearly defined hiking option. In Reichelsheim, you can follow the historic city wall on a walk; the preserved wall remains, the western gate, and four of the seven original defensive towers are central to the town’s history. Another walking trail goes around Bergwerksee lake. The options vary in focus: a loop around Heuchelheim, historic fortifications, or a route around the lake.

Blofeld Trails and Wild Cherry Trees

The Blofeld Loop starts at the parking lot by the village community center and follows a grassy path behind the last houses in Blofeld. A woodland path on the loop leads to Germany’s oldest wild cherry tree and from there along the southern side of Eichelberg. This distinctive tree gives the trail a clear nature theme and a named destination; the city wall, by contrast, offers a historical focus. This lets you alternate between nature and history when choosing your outings.

City Wall, Town Hall, and Churches

Reichelsheim’s architectural history can be traced through several notable dates. The town hall was built from 1570 to 1576 and was used mainly as a market hall at the time. The Protestant church in Reichelsheim is a pseudo-basilica dating from the 15th century; the church in Heuchelheim was endowed in 1420. The town hall and churches offer different historical perspectives alongside the remains of the fortifications: their former use as a market hall and their religious building and founding histories complement the story of the city wall.

Insights into the Landscape and Wetterau

The history of the landscape also includes lignite open-pit mining. The last Wetterau lignite open-pit mining operations, Sections VI and VII between the Reichelsheim districts of Weckesheim and Dorn-Assenheim, were permanently discontinued in 1991. This dated chapter adds another time period to the town’s history alongside its historic buildings.

The wider Wetterau travel destination also offers a regional perspective on nature and cycling. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. A network of regional and long-distance cycling routes runs through the Wetterau, and many of these routes are connected. This broadens the focus from individual walking and hiking ideas to nature and cycling routes across the wider region.

The Wetterau Museum also offers a regional history perspective. It presents town and regional history from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information center for the central Wetterau. These topics complement Reichelsheim’s architectural history with another temporal and regional perspective.
