Hirzenhain reveals two particularly distinctive sides: a long industrial history centered on iron and artistic casting, as well as Gothic church art. The Nidder, the Iron Trail and a mountain biking network offer further, varied ways to enjoy outdoor activities. When choosing your accommodation, you can be guided by the interests that shape your trip: cultural history, cycling or seasonal water activities.

Industrial history and artistic casting

The industrial history can be traced through specific dates. Count Ludwig-Christian of Stolberg-Gedern built the first charcoal-fired blast furnace in Hirzenhain in 1678. In 1947, the Buderus ironworks in Wetzlar established an artistic casting department at its Hirzenhain plant. Monumental buildings in Buderus Park recall the town’s industrial past.

The Hirzenhain Art Casting Museum focuses on art casting “Made in Hirzenhain” from 1947 to 2015. The works of artistic casting, created to a high standard, span the period from the Middle Ages to modern times. A clearly defined local focus thus sits alongside a broad historical timeframe.

Church art and local remembrance

The former Augustinian monastery complex includes the Church of St. Mary, a pilgrimage church. Once Catholic, it is now Protestant. The church was built in the Gothic style and consecrated in 1448. Hirzenhain Protestant Church is a cultural monument. Its sandstone rood screen separated the canons’ gathering place from that of pilgrims and laypeople—a structural detail that also reveals the church’s former layout.

At the municipal level, the protected Jewish cemetery also recalls the past: it is a cultural monument and documents the diversity of local community life in times gone by.

Circular trail, cycling and water

The Iron Trail is a circular cultural-historical and geological trail between Gedern and Hirzenhain. The Iron Trail features ten information boards and scenic viewpoints. Those interested in art and industrial history will find a different perspective here than in the museum: the circular trail combines cultural-historical and geological topics with views of the landscape.

One access point to the Vogelsberg Arena mountain biking network is in Hirzenhain. Cyclists can also access an extensive mountain biking network here, running towards Hoherodskopf. The Nidder flows through Hirzenhain; fishing is possible at the reservoir in the town itself. Activities range from a circular tour and mountain biking to spending time by the water.

For families and nature-loving water enthusiasts, Hirzenhain Natural Swimming Pool is a popular destination. It is seasonal: the 2026 swimming season ended on August 30, and visitors are welcome in summer 2027. The time of year is therefore an important consideration when planning a day of swimming.

The Wetterau as a wider regional setting

The Wetterau also offers its own opportunities to enjoy nature, cycling and culture. The nature reserves in Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. Bingenheimer Ried is one of the key areas of the “Wetterau Floodplain Network” protected landscape. A network of regional and long-distance cycling routes runs through the Wetterau; many of these routes are connected. Numerous railway stations and stops make it possible to travel by public transport to cycling routes in Wetterau district. For specific connections, it is advisable to check the current timetable.

The Wetterau Museum presents local and regional history from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional Limes information center for the central Wetterau. Local guided tours include night watchman walks through old lanes and themed tours of sights; individual dates vary.
