Igstadt: Discover village history, culture and nature
Accommodation in Igstadt
Igstadt brings together landmarks visible from afar, traces of several centuries and a landscape that invites you to go for a walk. The 27-metre-high water tower, the Protestant church and the Wickerbach Valley each make their own distinctive contribution. There is also local culture and geological adventure walks for children and young people. You can tailor your stay to your interests in architectural history, nature or a particular event date.
Local history in the tower, church and monuments
Built in 1910, the water tower is 27 metres high and has become a landmark of Igstadt visible from afar. The Protestant church on Altmünsterstraße also brings together different eras: it was consecrated in 1728, while a tower dating from the 15th century was retained. The Altmünster monastery donated a valuable crucifix for the consecration. The organ, built by Friedrich Weigle in 1904, incorporates Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque elements. The church and organ thus reveal several layers of the village’s artistic and architectural history.
In the village centre, on the square “Auf der Linde”, stands the Lennedisch: a 176-year-old table made of red sandstone and a protected individual monument. Next to it are the old school building, which is also listed, and the war memorial. Another cultural monument is the reception building of Wiesbaden-Igstadt station. Built of brick, it is privately owned. The station is on the Ländchesbahn line between Wiesbaden Central Station and Niedernhausen in the Taunus. If you are planning to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
Walks and countryside around Igstadt
The “Wickerbachtal” nature reserve lies in the eastern part of the Igstadt district, between Igstadt and Kloppenheim. The countryside around Igstadt includes lovingly restored half-timbered buildings and two old mills; the eastern part of the district is ideal for extended walks. The area around the Wickerbach Valley is also well suited to walks and nature experiences. Conditions and access rules may vary seasonally. Before visiting, also check the boundaries of the nature reserve and the rules in force.
For a trip with children and young people, the geological adventure walks offer a specific point of interest: they lead through the Igstadt district and are particularly popular. The Hessian long-distance cycle route R 6 also passes through Igstadt. If you include it in your plans, check the current route conditions.
Local culture and event dates
The Lindenkerb in Igstadt has been celebrated annually since June 1975. The Igstadt barn theatre was founded in 1988 and stages performances in the parish barn. Both give local culture its own place in your travel plans. If you would like to plan your stay around the Kerb festival or a performance, check the specific event dates.
This makes it easier to decide which experiences you want to shape your stay in Igstadt, without having to fit all your interests into a single itinerary.
Wiesbaden in the wider travel picture
Those who also include the wider destination of Wiesbaden alongside Igstadt will find further historical highlights there. The Neues Kurhaus Wiesbaden was inaugurated in 1907 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Biebrich Palace is a magnificent three-winged Baroque building, constructed between 1700 and 1750 directly on the banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden’s Biebrich district. These examples add other architectural styles and a further perspective on Wiesbaden to Igstadt’s local history.
