Osteel combines a distinctive linear settlement pattern with the history of Warnfried Church and the astronomers Fabricius. The Red Route runs through Osteel and passes Warnfried Church on its return journey north. You can plan your stay around local history and cycling.

Settlement Pattern and Landscape

Osteel was originally laid out along the edge of a raised bog. This origin shaped the town’s linear form. The fields also tell the story of the historic landscape: the strip fields known as “Osteeler Äcker” and “Langes Ackerland” are still visible for about two kilometres in the direction of Leezweg. Their approximate extent and direction provide a concrete point of reference as you explore the cultural landscape.

Warnfried Church and the History of Astronomy

Warnfried Church was built in the mid-13th century. Originally an imposing cruciform church, it was reduced to its present size in 1830. Remains of the columns that once supported the vaults have been preserved inside. The church’s furnishings include objects spanning ten centuries, among them sarcophagus lids from the 11th and 12th centuries and an elaborately decorated pulpit dating from 1699. The building’s history and its furnishings offer different insights into the church’s long past.

The Fabricius Monument stands in the churchyard. It was unveiled in 1895 in honour of the astronomers David Fabricius and his son Johannes. The sculpture depicts Urania with a telescope; a plaque shows the solar disc and sunspots. The connection to Osteel is also part of the town’s history: David Fabricius was pastor in Osteel from 1604 to 1617 and discovered the variable star Mira Ceti. Johannes Fabricius was the first to discover sunspots. At the monument and the church, you encounter two distinct aspects of local history: architecture and astronomical research.

Cycling Routes with Different Connections to the Town

If you want to explore Osteel by bike, the routes described here take different paths. The “Zu den Likedeelern” tour reaches the northern edge of town and then follows a marked route along residential streets to Marienhafe. The Red Route runs through Osteel and passes Warnfried Church on its return journey north. This gives you a clear basis for comparing the routes: one continues from the northern edge of town to Marienhafe, while the other passes Warnfried Church on its way north.

For regional cycling information, the Marienhafe Tourist Information Office offers cycling maps, planned tours, literature and help with route planning.
