Leezdorf reveals its character on two scales: the Leezdorf Mill is a striking landmark, while the dispersed settlement pattern continues to shape the village. A large market square, regular village and mill festivals, themed gardens and cycling routes complete the picture. Architectural history, village life and rural routes come together here, offering different ways to tailor your stay to your interests.

The Leezdorf Mill: Architectural History and Technology

The Leezdorf Mill is the village’s landmark and a distinctive feature of its architectural history. The present building is a two-storey gallery Dutch windmill dating from 1896/97. It has been fully restored and remains operational, powered by wind, an electric motor and a diesel engine. These different power sources give the mill a technical dimension alongside its historic design. In recognition of the restoration, the Leezdorf local heritage association received third prize for outstanding monument preservation in the Weser-Ems region—an award for its work to preserve the mill.

The mill building houses the “Oll bruukdom” exhibition room. There is also a tea house in a former storage room. If you would like to visit, check whether the tea house is open before your trip.

Dispersed Settlement, Market Square and Village Life

Leezdorf developed as a dispersed settlement, and this pattern is still visible in its layout. The landmark and the settlement pattern tell the story of the village on different scales: the mill represents a striking building, while the dispersed settlement shapes the wider landscape. At the centre is a large market square, where village and mill festivals are held regularly. For those interested in local traditions, both the mill and the festival site offer tangible cultural points of interest.

Explore Gardens and Cycling Routes

The themed gardens at the Schittenhelm garden centre in Leezdorf offer a different way to explore. They include an elf garden, a bamboo grove and a woodland garden, inviting visitors to stroll and discover. Check the opening arrangements before your visit.

Leezdorf offers cyclists a range of routes to explore. The “Peat Canals and Towpaths” route passes the Leezdorf Mill and continues from there towards Hage and Lütetsburg, passing small farms, fields and pastureland. The 29.1-kilometre “To the Likedeelers” circular tour starts in Marienhafe, passes through Leezdorf, Hage and Norden, and returns to Marienhafe. The first route follows the way from the mill towards Hage and Lütetsburg and takes in the rural landscape along the way; the second is a circular tour through several named places with a stated total length. You can choose according to the type of route you prefer. Check the route conditions before setting out.

The 73-kilometre Störtebekerland Cultural Route offers another regional perspective across the wider Störtebekerland. It is an exploration tour through varied landscapes and to castles and cultural landmarks, bringing together landscape and culture across a wider region.

In the wider destination of Aurich

In the wider destination of Aurich, the Fehntjer Tief Nature Conservation Centre focuses on environmental education and preserving the natural and cultural landscape of “Fehntjer Tief”. It is an out-of-school learning centre for environmental education as well as a place for meetings and public outreach. In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the plants and birdlife of the wet meadows on walking or cycling tours. The centre is also home to a listed Gulfhaus dating from 1843, a typical East Frisian farmhouse. Here, landscape conservation, environmental education and historic farming heritage come together.
