Südbrookmerland brings together the Great Sea, cycling routes, museums and a pilgrimage route. This gives you a choice of different focuses: time by the water, tours through the countryside or explorations of cultural history. Which of these aspects interests you most may also shape your search for suitable accommodation.

Water sports and tours on the Great Sea

Sailing and surfing are possible on the Great Sea, East Frisia’s largest inland lake. Motorboats are not permitted on the lake; instead, they travel on the many waterways around it. This distinction is useful when planning, so you can tell activities on the lake apart from motorboat traffic on the surrounding waterways.

You can start canoe or bicycle tours at the paddle-and-pedal station on the Great Sea. A combined tour links the two activities in a set order: first, the canoe trip follows a circular route along the Süderriede back to the Great Sea; this is followed by a cycling tour along the 3-Meere-Weg. The two stages are clearly specified, so you do not have to put together a connection between them yourself. If you would like to plan this tour, check before your trip whether it is offered at your preferred time.

Plan your own cycling routes

Cycling routes in Südbrookmerland run alongside fields and meadows, past East Frisian waterways and through villages; some go right by the Great Sea. If you would like to plan your own tour, you can use the numbered-junction system and ride from one signpost to the next. This lets you plan your route around the marked junctions. Check the local signs when putting your route together.

Museums and regional history

At the open-air museum Museumsdorf Dörpmuseum Münkeboe, workshops, facilities, tools and machines from the former working life of the village and its immediate surroundings have been brought together. The living museum includes a fully operational grain windmill. Visitors can also sample fresh bread from the stone oven there. Tastings are subject to museum operations; check before your visit whether they are offered.

The Moordorf Moor Museum depicts the challenging 200-year development of an East Frisian peatland settlement in an original moorland landscape. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wiegboldsbur houses a round, upward-widening Gothic metal baptismal font. It rests on four knight figures and bears twelve images, including depictions of eight apostles, the baptism of Jesus and the Crucifixion. These details give the site its own distinctive cultural-historical character.

The “Schola Dei” pilgrimage route

The 40-kilometre “Schola Dei” pilgrimage route offers another perspective. It runs from Ihlow through Südbrookmerland to Norden and follows an old pilgrimage route for much of its length. Its distance and historic course give this route a distinct character among the different ways to experience the landscape.

Nature and cultural landscape in the Aurich travel destination

In the wider Aurich travel destination, the Fehntjer Tief nature conservation station works to preserve the “Fehntjer Tief” natural and cultural landscape. It is also an extracurricular environmental education centre and a place for meetings and public outreach. In spring and summer, school pupils and visitors can experience the flora and birdlife of the Fehntjer Tief’s wet meadows on tours by bicycle or on foot.

The station includes a listed Gulfhaus dating from 1843, a typical East Frisian farmhouse. It complements the natural surroundings with a specific example of regional architectural heritage. These attractions belong to the wider Aurich travel destination and offer their own nature and culture focus alongside the experiences in Südbrookmerland described above.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When searching for accommodation, consider whether the Great Sea, self-planned cycling tours or museum visits will be the focus of your trip. Then compare the locations of the accommodation on offer with the places and activities you actually plan to visit. This way, your choice of base will reflect your personal travel plans.
