In Eversen, fields, meadows, extensive woodland and the Örtze shape the landscape. The village also has a historic centre with old half-timbered houses and named farmsteads. Hiking and relaxation are among the activities the area invites you to enjoy. If you like to combine village history with time outdoors, you can choose between a historic circular hiking trail and a longer cycling tour that follows in the footsteps of the salt workers.

Hiking along historic paths

The approximately 6.5-kilometre circular trail “Historic Eversen” takes you through the heath village, which lies on the Örtze, along historic paths. Several information boards provide details along the route. The approximate distance can help you plan; as conditions on the ground may change, check the route’s current condition before setting out.

Half-timbered houses and historic farmsteads

Old half-timbered houses continue to shape Eversen’s historic centre. The Old School on Dorfstraße was built using half-timbered construction in the late 19th century. The Thölkesche House is another of the village’s distinctive buildings: it is the largest farm building in Eversen and an old four-post house.

Each of the manor estates has its own historic name. Rittergut Eversen I is the oldest of the three estates in Eversen. Rittergut II, also known as Majorshof, is the village’s third manor building. Rittergut III is a two-storey manor house built in 1700.

At the end of the old village street, a memorial commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. The Binnestä at the Kolk on the Örtze tells a different story: from the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th century, it was a binding site where tree trunks were tied together to form rafts and transported away by water.

The Röhrendamm also points to earlier work involving water. In the 18th century, a pipeline made from hollowed-out tree trunks ran there. It carried brine from the salt spring in Sülze to the salt workers in Altensalzkoth.

A longer perspective on two wheels

The 39-kilometre cycling tour “Through Heath, Forest and the Örtze Valley” passes through the Südheide Nature Park, crosses the heath villages of Oldendorf, Sülze and Eversen, and follows in the footsteps of the salt workers. The “Gasthaus Otte” car park on Dorfstraße in Eversen is listed as a possible starting point for the tour. Check local route and parking conditions before travelling.

To choose between the tours, you can compare distance and mode of travel: the circular hiking trail is approximately 6.5 kilometres long and focuses on Eversen’s village history; the cycling tour covers 39 kilometres and links several heath villages with the history of the salt workers. This can help you decide which activity you would like to shape your stay.

More nature and culture in Bergen

Bergen also offers its own nature and culture. Becklinger Moor lies in the northwest of Bergen. The Südheide Nature Park stretches north of Celle between the heath towns of Eschede, Südheide, Müden/Örtze, Faßberg, Unterlüß, Lachendorf, Bergen and Winsen an der Aller.

The Römstedthaus Museum in Bergen is around 400 years old, has been preserved in its original condition and provides a comprehensive insight into rural life. Its main building is a 17th-century smokehouse. The upper floor houses a permanent archaeological exhibition featuring prehistoric and early historic finds, most of which come from the greater Bergen area. Educational programmes are available for school groups; if you are planning a visit, check the latest programme details in advance.

Other landmarks in Bergen include the Thousand-Year-Old Oak, a natural monument on the south side of St. Lamberti Church, and Bürgerpark. The park is a local recreation area for residents and visitors; a playground invites children to play.
