Müden invites you to explore the Örtze, Heidesee and historic buildings. On foot, you’ll encounter river and forest landscapes as well as traces of the village’s history. When planning your stay, consider whether you’d like to focus on longer walks, observing nature or historic places.

Experience the water and trails

Canoeing downstream on the Örtze is permitted with restrictions only from the mill in Müden: every year from 16 May to 14 October, from 09:00 to 18:00, and only in canoes, Canadian canoes or kayaks. Check water levels and current restrictions before setting off.

The 12.5-kilometre Heideschleife Müden begins and ends at the historic watermill. It connects Heidesee, the riverside landscapes of the Örtze and Wietze, Wietzer Berg, the Heidschnuckenweg, St. Laurentius Church and half-timbered houses in the village centre. This route brings together landscape, hiking and village history.

A shorter way to get out and about is the approximately 2.5-kilometre walk around Heidesee, where you can discover local flora and fauna. The lake has become an important habitat for numerous plants and animals, including dragonflies. Swimming is not permitted in Heidesee. Comparing this walk with the longer Heideschleife can help you choose a route suited to your travel day.

The River and Forest Experience Trail starts in Müden and follows forest paths and scenic trails along the Örtze. Interactive signs accompany you along the way. For a different perspective, take the audio walk: as you stroll through the village, it brings Müden’s 1,000-year history to life. While the experience trail focuses on the forest and river, the audio walk turns your attention to the village’s history.

Historic places and special insights

The historic watermill was built between 1435 and 1438 in the style of a Lower Saxon farmhouse and renovated between 1989 and 1997. Today, the building houses the tourist information office, a library, a marriage room and exhibition spaces. There is also an herb garden and an orchard meadow at the mill. Historic architecture and present-day uses come together here.

Other buildings also point to different chapters in the village’s history: the old Kösterschule was built in 1606. A side building on the Rosien/Kohlmeyer farm on Schulstraße still contains nearly all the original equipment from the old wheelwright’s workshop. The 200-year-old Treppenspeicher granary was moved from Schmarbeck to Müden’s cemetery, where an exhibition explores Müden’s cultural landscape and church history.

Those interested in birds of prey can find the “Falconer for a Day” experience package at Wildpark Müden. It includes observing the birds up close, flight training and taking part in a flight demonstration. This hands-on wildlife experience adds another way to get to know Müden alongside its hiking trails and historic places.

These different highlights offer a range of ways to plan your stay in Müden and find a suitable base for your trip.
