Lutterloh combines a stream running through the village with heathland on Schillohsberg and a hiking trail that passes right through the village. The Heathland Nature Trail explores the development of the heathland landscape, while the restored stepped granary offers a different perspective. This gives you a range of interests to consider when planning your trip: you can focus your outings on hiking, landscape history or a local building. When choosing where to stay, you can already think about whether tours, observing nature or getting a feel for the village is most important to you.

The stream and heathland as distinct landscapes

The Weesener Brook flows through Lutterloh. The heathland on Schillohsberg lies between Lutterloh and Neulutterloh, south of the K17. These are two clearly distinct landscape features: the stream runs through the village, while the heathland stretches between the two villages. Schillohsberg is also the setting for the Heathland Nature Trail and its stops. If you like to get a sense of the landscape first when travelling, you can experience the village stream and heathland as distinct points of interest.

Landscape history on the Heathland Nature Trail

The Schillohsberg Heathland Nature Trail lies between Lutterloh and Unterlüß. This 2.2-kilometre circular trail passes six stops where visitors can learn about the development of the heathland landscape from the Ice Age to the present day. So the focus is not just on what a heathland looks like today: the trail explores different phases of its development right up to the present. The six stops give the walk a thematic structure, with landscape history as its central thread. If you prefer a trail that offers a specific theme as well as a walk, you can explore geological time periods alongside the landscape as it is today.

A different view at the Blue Eye

At the Blue Eye on Schillohsberg, the development of the landscape is brought to life in a different way. Visitors look through a viewing window onto the heathland on Schillohsberg; a rotating disc and five different displays show different stages of development across geological periods. The comparison with the circular trail is straightforward: there, six stops form a sequence along a 2.2-kilometre route; here, the viewing window and displays bring the view and geological perspectives together in one place. If you are weighing up a walk against a more focused viewing experience, these two options offer different ways to explore the same theme.

Hiking to and through Lutterloh

The Heidschnuckenweg quality hiking trail passes right through Lutterloh. Visitors can also start selected routes from the cycling and hiking trail network in the South Heath Nature Park here. Alongside the themed circular trail on Schillohsberg, there are therefore other selected routes to choose from starting in Lutterloh. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The restored stepped granary

The old stepped granary in Lutterloh has been restored. There are picnic benches outside the building that make a suitable place to rest. Alongside hiking and landscape, this brings a local building into view. The stepped granary offers a different perspective from the stops on Schillohsberg: there, the focus is on the development of the heathland; here, it is a restored granary. The benches also provide a convenient place to take a break. If you would like to plan a rest between a tour and exploring the village, this is one possible stop.
