Unterlüß invites you to discover its forests and heathland along a variety of trails and through different experiences. The Heidschnuckenweg trail runs right through the town; other highlights include the Lüsswald forest, forestry history, art and the birdlife of the Südheide. This raises an appealing question as you plan your trip: would you like to spend most of the day outdoors, or combine nature experiences with a museum or cultural visit?

Explore forests and heathland along a variety of trails

The Lüsswald Tour is around 6 kilometres long and runs entirely through the Lüsswald forest near Unterlüß, between Uelzen and Celle. The W8 “Primeval Forest in the Lüß” hike offers a different perspective: it leads through the extensive woodland southeast of Unterlüß, along the natural forest reserve and up to Lüßberg. At 130 metres, it is the highest elevation in the Südheide Nature Park. The “Primeval Forest in the Lüß” Forest Experience Trail also runs through the centuries-old Lüßwald forest. This family-friendly circular route is designed as an engaging half-day excursion.

Between Lutterloh and Unterlüß lies the Schillohsberg Heath Experience Trail in the “Heideflächen Mittleres Lüßplateau” nature reserve. This entertaining and informative circular route is 2.2 kilometres long. One of its stops is the “Blaues Auge vom Schillohsberg” viewpoint, which offers a special view of the landscape. Unlike the route through the Lüsswald forest, this trail takes you through heathland and to a named viewpoint. The Lünsholz nature reserve is also nearby, around two kilometres east of Unterlüß: this woodland consists mainly of structurally diverse beech forests.

Plan your routes

The Heidschnuckenweg quality hiking trail runs right through Unterlüß. You can also start selected routes from the cycling and hiking trail network in the Südheide Nature Park here. The nearest heathland can be reached on foot in 15 minutes. The walk from Unterlüß station to the “Primeval Forest in the Lüß” Forest Experience Trail takes around 20 minutes; bus routes 260 from the direction of Hermannsburg and 261 from the direction of Faßberg run to the Lüßwald car park. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before setting off.

You can also explore the landscape by bike from a different perspective: the 22-kilometre “White Gold of the Südheide” route leads through the Südheide Nature Park, past numerous heathland areas and former kieselguhr mining sites. These distances give you a practical guide for planning, while preserving the distinct character of each landscape and route.

Art, kieselguhr and forestry history

At the Albert König Museum, the permanent exhibition “Kieselgur – Die Erlebnis-ausstellung” connects natural history with the mineral resource kieselguhr. Visitors can listen to first-hand accounts, experiment with a range of specimens and use a microscope. A special exhibition at the museum explores the formation, discovery and uses of kieselguhr. The museum also preserves the artistic estate of the painter and graphic artist Albert König (1881–1944). Alongside his work, it displays pieces by other artists who are significant to the region.

Haus Siedenholz tells another story of forestry history: it is one of the oldest houses in the municipality of Unterlüß and was first mentioned in 1697 as a single-storey forester’s house. It offers multi-day, experiential and activity-based educational programmes for school classes, as well as children’s and youth groups. Art, natural history, history and educational activities are therefore all part of the destination’s appeal.

Birdlife and architecture in Lutterloh

In the district of Lutterloh stands the carefully restored Lutterloh Treppenspeicher, a traditional wooden building with a distinctive external staircase and thatched roof. It houses a tourist information centre dedicated to the “Birdlife of the Südheide”. On a large monitor, you can choose from ten artistic video clips. Each lasts five minutes and combines animated, narrated photographs with the sounds of birds in their habitats. A visit brings together architectural heritage and birdlife, while the exhibition puts local habitats centre stage.

If you are looking for accommodation for a trip to Unterlüß, your planned itinerary can help you choose what to focus on: forest and heathland trails, art, forestry history and the birdlife of the Südheide all await.
