Bergen: Moorland, Heath and History
Accommodation in Bergen
Bergen can be explored through a range of themes: the moorland in the northwest and a vivid glimpse of rural history at Römstedthaus. There are also the Thousand-Year-Old Oak and Bürgerpark. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether the landscape, museum history or time outdoors is your priority.
Moorland and trails
Becklinger Moor lies northwest of Bergen. A hiking trail leads around the moor near Bergen, in the south of the Lüneburg Heath. If you plan to walk it, check the current conditions before setting out. Südheide Nature Park stretches north of Celle between the heath towns of Eschede, Südheide, Müden/Örtze, Faßberg, Unterlüß, Lachendorf, Bergen and Winsen an der Aller. Bergen is therefore part of a wider heathland region, with activities ranging from individual hikes to regional cycling and walking routes.
Discover Römstedthaus
Römstedthaus Museum in Bergen is around 400 years old, preserved in its original condition, and offers a comprehensive insight into rural life. Its main building is a smoke house from the 17th century. The upper floor houses a permanent archaeological exhibition of prehistoric and early historic finds, most of which come from the wider Bergen area. The preserved house and the archaeological objects thus offer different ways of exploring the past: the building conveys rural life, while the exhibition presents finds from various early periods. The museum offers educational programs on various topics for school classes. If you are planning a visit with a school class, check the current program details in advance.
Oak, church and Bürgerpark
The Thousand-Year-Old Oak is a natural monument located on the south side of St. Lamberti Church in Bergen. Bürgerpark is a popular local recreation spot for residents and visitors, and has a playground for children. The two places offer different highlights: the oak combines a natural monument with its setting by the church, while Bürgerpark offers time outdoors and a playground. Together with Römstedthaus, they provide options for a range of interests when planning your day, from nature and activity to history and play.

In Celle, a very easy 3.22-kilometer walk leads from the ducal palace to the synagogue. Celle’s town center has almost 500 half-timbered houses; the synagogue is considered the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony.
Wienhausen Monastery offers another cultural highlight in the wider Celle travel destination: its medieval art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, a painted nuns’ choir, chests and cupboards, and a collection of the world’s oldest spectacles. The Gothic tapestries are explained by experts for one week each year, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost. Check the dates before planning your trip.
